Grade Bulletin - Term One, 2025

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:

  • Participate in the life and mission of the school.

  • Build the capacity to continuously reason, reflectively, logically and critically.

Religious Education

Students will explore the unit, ‘Discipleship’ Students will uncover the meaning of Christian discipleship and how they are called to live a Christian life. Students will study the Beatitudes as our way to live a Christian and moral life. Made in the image and likeness of God, we are called to respect the dignity of all humanity. Students will investigate judgements and behaviours that prevent people from preserving the human dignity of all. Students will explore Scripture, Church Tradition, and the actions of Jesus to deepen their understanding of how to live and act justly.  

 

During the term, students will also explore the unit  ‘The Liturgical Year’. This unit enables students to explore the traditions, beliefs, Scripture and events celebrated by the Catholic community throughout the Liturgical Year and especially during the time of Lent, Holy Week and Easter.

English

Creating written texts and understanding and responding to literature

This term, students will explore ‘The Frozen Continent’ which focuses on building students’ skills, understandings, values and attitudes in English while exploring Antarctica’s uniqueness and critical importance for the global environment. This unit focuses on argument and authority and symbol, image and connotation. Students practise note-taking, synthesising and communicating information. They analyse text features that characterise an authoritative style and apply these when reading and viewing texts and in the composition of a variety of texts. Students explore the impact of writers and composers utilising symbol, image and connotation in texts and apply literary devices for clear purposes in their own writing and composing of a range of informative, imaginative and persuasive texts about aspects of sustainability. 

 

Reading Comprehension

This year, each class will explore a different novel each term. In Term 1, 6White will read ‘Two Wolves’ by Tristan Bancks, 6Gold will read 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio and 6Blue will read 'Parvana' by Deborah Ellis. These novels will be swapped between classes throughout the year. Students will develop their fluency skills and comprehension of texts for a wide purpose by analysing structures, and language and monitoring their comprehension. 

 

Spelling

Students will continue to follow the ‘Soundwaves’ spelling program and will have the opportunity to revise their spelling skills using the online component of the program.

Mathematics

This term, Year 6 will be focusing on Time, Mass, Length, Additive Relations, Angles, Fractions and 3D Spatial Structures. Students will be selecting and applying appropriate problem-solving strategies when undertaking investigations. We encourage you to discuss with your child what they have been learning in Mathematics and help them apply these skills to real-world situations. 

Science and Technology

This unit focuses on Earth’s place in the solar system, changes on its surface caused by natural disasters and the exploration of how these may be mitigated. It will further develop students' understanding of the Earth, its position in the solar system and as a dynamic part of a complex, interrelated system.

Geography

Students will explore countries of the Asia region and the connections Australia has with other countries across the world. Students learn about the diversity of the world’s people, including the indigenous peoples of other countries.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sports lessons, students will focus on refining fundamental movement skills through fun games and challenges that enhance coordination, decision-making, and tactical strategies.  The unit also incorporates cultural games, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander activities, promoting inclusivity and respect. Students will develop sportsmanship and fair play in a supportive environment, with a focus on soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork, to prepare for the Interschools Sports Soccer Gala Day in Term 2. Students will also be participating in games and activities to prepare them for the OLF Cross Country which is on Friday the 14th of March in week 6. 

 

Students will participate in the 6 week Fit Futures Active Gymnastics Program, starting in Week 3 and finishing in Week 9. This program will focus on developing their fundamental movement skills (FMS) while applying decision-making and problem-solving strategies to perform movement sequences. Throughout the program, students will build self-awareness and communication skills. They will have the opportunity to use various equipment, including mats, beams, bars, and mini trampolines, to enhance their gymnastics skills.

 

Open Parachute will take place each Wednesday, The program aims to provide practical support on mental health to students. The sessions aim to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy, and self-efficacy in students.

Amadeus

Students will continue with the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing and organising sound within their regular Classroom Music lessons. 

  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:

    • Arrive on time for each lesson

    • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson

    • Bring their Essential Elements* music book

    • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

In Visual Arts this term students will be focusing on the 'Elements of Art'. They will be applying and engaging these elements to their Antarctica and English Units of work. Students will also be engaging in Artist studies with a focus on Portraiture. Students will be having Mrs Brown on a fortnightly basis over the term.

 

In Music with Mr Parlato, students will develop their musical skills and understanding by exploring the ukulele. They will learn to identify and describe the parts of the instrument, develop technical proficiency in playing fundamental chords, and apply various strumming patterns to perform songs.

 

Homework 

This year your child will have a homework grid, providing them with a range of curriculum activities and inquiry learning tasks. This will include students completing a Numeracy task related to the units taught in Class to consolidate understanding. Other tasks will include spelling and reading/comprehension activities, religious education tasks and opportunities for inquiry learning throughout the term.  All students will be issued with a Homework Book. 

 

Parents, please be reminded that family time and extracurricular activities are a very important part of your child’s development. Take note that reading is the most important aspect of learning at home with your child. Children in Year 6 are recommended to be spending 40 minutes per day completing their homework tasks. Please communicate with your child's classroom teacher via their diary if for any reason they are unable to complete their weekly tasks.
