ART/AUSLAN (ARTLAN)
We have had a busy time lately in Artlan! Grade 3-6 have started learning Media Arts. This week we have discussed movie and musical posters and practised digital drawing on the Fresco (5/6's) and Sketchbook (3/4's) apps on our iPads. The apps are free to download, all students have shown a great interest in all the drawing functions. Next week they will design a digital poster for our upcoming school concert.
The 3-6's also had the opportunity to attend an incursion with Indigenous artist Sam Richards. 3/4's made a message stick and 5/6's made a set of clapping sticks. Every one worked so hard sanding the tea tree bark back to smooth finished. We were very impressed with everyone's persistence!
Grade 2's have celebrated their "Deaf Cafe" unit by enjoying a hot chocolate in their own pottery. They did such a good job crafting their cups - we only had two leak!
Grade Prep and One have learned all about the Commonwealth Games this week, focusing on Auslan signs for the ten Commonwealth sports. All students were able to sign "My favourite sport is ..." and also demonstrate gold, silver and bronze medal signs for first, second and third place. They finished off with a creative medal design drawing using our new gold, silver and bronze crayon drawing blocks.

Fun across the school!
What an exciting start to Term 3 in STEM!
- Our Foundation students have been exploring movement by investigating whether different objects push, pull, bounce, roll or slide. They also became mini scientists as they tested what happens when a soccer ball is kicked with a small force compared to a large force!
- Grade 1 students have begun their exciting unit on Forces, investigating push and pull forces before diving into the fascinating effects of gravity on objects in water. There have been plenty of predictions, experiments and surprising discoveries!
- Our Grade 2 students are making some noise as they explore sound! This week they investigated which materials carry sound the best and discovered how different objects produce high and low pitches when tapped.
- Grade 3 students have become budding geologists, learning how to identify different minerals by observing their colour, texture, shape and hardness. They have even been using the Mohs Hardness Scale to test and compare the hardness of a range of minerals.
- In Grade 4, students are investigating the Weather Cycle and were amazed to discover that although our planet is covered in water, only 2.5% is freshwater, and just 1% is readily available for us to use. It's certainly sparked some thoughtful conversations about why water is such a precious resource.
- Our Grade 5/6 students have launched into learning about our incredible Solar System. They were amazed to watch a scale model of the solar system that required an area measuring 11.2 kilometres across just to fit everything in the correct proportions— it really put the vastness of space into perspective!
There are plenty more exciting STEM experiences to look forward to this term, including our Cosmic Chemistry Show for National Science Week on Wednesday 19 August. Don't forget to log into Xuno to pay and approve your child's attendance for this fantastic incursion. We can't wait for another term filled with curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning!
PE
We have started the term with an incredible opportunity with our 5/6 students meeting some of the Richmond Football Club players! Seven players came to the school to do a Q&A, including captain and premiership player Toby Nankervis. The students were able to gain an insight into the life of a professional footballer, and some were able to get signatures on the Richmond items.
In the upcoming weeks, PHPS will be playing in their own World Cup Soccer tournament which starts this Monday. Students have made teams and chosen the countries that they would like to represent
We also have the District Athletics Day coming up in August at Casey Fields. Some of the sports are Long jump, Triple Jump, 1500m, discus and shotput. We also have 3/4 Hoop Time, and we our Tee-ball girls team won their Division Grand Final and are now going to the Regional level! Congratulations to everyone!
