Debating Round 3
This week the debating team competed against Emington Public School for an exceptional round 3 debate. The topic for the Waratah team was years 5 and 6 should have a cooking class. Bella had a powerful start with a brilliant model and allocation. The opposition responded well with a well structured rebuttal and argument. Nabila’s arguments were powerful and Chole finished off strong. As the debate progressed to the final stage - the adjudicator, Tahlia, announced the clashes. If we won 2 clashes it was over. And luck was on our side, the first two clashes went to us. Silent cheers erupted in the Ermington Hall. It was an honour to win three debates in a row!

This week, the Wattle team competed against the Ermington Public Schools Gold team in a tough and exciting debate. As the affirmative team, our topic was ‘School leader positions such as SRC and house captains should be banned.
’Irina started us off with an exceptional model, proposing that Kindy buddies take the place of formal leadership roles. She spoke about peer pressure and how traditional titles can hurt students who do not hold a role. Next, our second speaker, Joy, delivered strong rebuttals against the Gold team's case and discussed how leadership positions can affect student attitudes and bias. Ryan, our third speaker, followed with clear rebuttals and a solid team summary.
When our adjudicator, Tahlia, announced the results, she broke down the three main clashes. We won the first clash, but the Gold team narrowly took the next two. In our feedback, we realized we didn't expand on our Kindy buddies model enough throughout the debate. The negative team had also rebutted our arguments well and managed to use our mistakes for their win. It was a very close and challenging round, and while we did not get the win, we had an amazing time and learned a valuable lesson for next time!

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee - Regional Finals
Yesterday (Monday, August 3rd), Carlingford West participated in the Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Finals. Our Stage 2 representative, Sylvia S (4 Lime), and our Stage 3 representative, Lekhan V (5A) competed against 30 schools via Zoom and performed exceptionally well! Both Sylvia and Lekhan advanced through rounds that included unfamiliar words from the unseen Spelling Bee word list—a tremendous effort from both students.
Congratulations to Lekhan for making the top 10, and to Sylvia for making the top 6 among all the schools competing in the Regional Finals!
