Year 10 Careers Education Program
As the College’s Careers Advisor, I’m thrilled to begin working with our Year 10 students this year. It is a privilege to support them as they explore future pathways and make key subject choices for the coming year.
Our Year 10 Careers Education Program is designed to help students start thinking about their options beyond secondary education. Through a range of initiatives, we aim to assist them in:
Identifying their interests and skills
Researching different career options
Understanding the evolving job market
Developing essential employability skills and applying them in real-world scenarios
Creating a Pathways Plan
Building resumes and honing interview techniques.
The Year 10 Careers Education Program encompasses the following initiatives:
Career Education Lessons
Career education sessions will commence in Week 5, providing students with valuable resources to support their decision-making regarding subject selection, courses, and career pathways.
HSC Subject Selection Support
Students will receive guidance on HSC subject selection, helping them align their choices with their post-Year 12 aspirations. These discussions will begin in Term 2 during Careers Lessons. If any parent/carer would like to be involved in this discussion with their son, please email me at the start of Term 2.
University, Private College, and TAFE Pathways
Students will receive information on tertiary education options, including entry requirements and how their HSC subject choices impact eligibility.
Individual Career Counselling
Students seeking further guidance can book individual sessions during recess, lunch, or before school. Support is also available for those considering apprenticeships or traineeships after Year 10. Parents/carers are welcome to join these discussions.
Careers Newsletters
Careers newsletters are emailed to Year 10, 11 and 12 students and published in the Especean for parents/carers. These newsletters provide the latest updates on careers and courses, helping students explore potential pathways. I strongly encourage both students and parents/carers to engage with these resources to uncover new interests and opportunities. Additionally, they include access to university-hosted webinars, offering valuable insights into a variety of courses and study options.
Industry Engagement and Guest Speakers
Our program connects students with universities and industry professionals, including Old Boys who share their experiences across a diverse range of careers. These lunchtime sessions are open to Year 10, 11, and 12 students and provide invaluable insights into various career paths.
Online Career Resources
Students can utilise platforms like the St Patrick’s College Careers website, CANVAS Careers, Job Jump, and Career Tools for comprehensive career information. This career education platform provides information on pathway options including careers and courses. The students in Year 10 will be provided with access to JobJump during careers lessons this term. Year 11 and 12 students already have access. Below are details on how parents/carers can set up an account with Job Jump.
For any questions, please feel free to reach out to me via phone on 8705-9255 or email me at joanne.cupac@spc.nsw.edu.au.
I look forward to supporting our students as they navigate this exciting stage of their journey.
