Your child's wellbeing is extremely important to us at Curiosity which is why we promote Sun Safety practices and promote Healthy Eating.
We are SunSmart Service (SunSmart UV Policy)
Each year our Sun Smart policy goes under review with the Cancer Council who reviews and approves our procedures and practices. This means that we actively:
- Check the UV rating each morning to assess when sunscreen needs to be applied.
- Apply 50+ sunscreen to all children prior to any outside exposure up to 3 times a day if with us in the Afternoon Program.
- When temperatures rise above 36 degrees, children engage in play inside.
- Hats are encouraged to be worn all year round, but must be worn when the UV is 3 or more.
- Design learning experiences within shaded areas of our outdoor learning spaces.
- Encourage children to wear long sleeved shirts (available as part of our uniform).
- Support children wearing EPF 10 sunglasses if parents provide them.
- Encourage the children to hydrate throughout the day, and regularly fill up bottles with fresh water.
- Promote children to put on their own sunscreen by modelling and supervising the process.
- Encourage the use of alternative sunscreen (provided by families) if children are sensitive to the Centre's provisions.
Healthy Eating (Nutrition, Beverages and Food Safety Policy)
Providing breakfast, fruit and afternoon tea requires us to have qualified Responsible Food Safety Supervisors onsite. Mrs Gliddon and Mrs Hannah are both accredited and supervise the training and uphold the standards of our Centre. This requires us to consider the following:
- Ensuring that food offered to children meets the Food Standards of Australia and New Zealand.
- Ensure that food is prepared in a hygienic manner and stored with quality control.
- Offer a variety of foods that meet the 'Eat for Health' guidelines.
- Train staff in food handling procedures.
We ask families to promote their child's eating at the Centre by:
- Involving their child in the selection of food that is sent for them to eat.
- Send food along in 'package free' lunch boxes. As a sustainable practise, we do not discard of food rubbish other than organic matter that we use for our garden and worm farm.
- Keeping the 'sometime foods' for consuming at home. This refers to foods such as processed biscuits, cake, chips, chocolates and lollies.
- Packing foods from the 'yellow zone' to promote long lasting energy.
- Providing a cold pack to sit alongside the lunch box to keep the food cold throughout the day.
- Filling drink bottles with water only. Please keep juice, milk and cordials for home.
