Clean Up Australia Day 2024

Clean Up Australia Day is a day which showcases our children as active citizens as they engage in sustainable practice, caring for the world in which we live.  But how can we be safe when cleaning up and caring for our world?  The children were quick to share their ideas – we could pick up items such as plastic or chip wrappers, but we needed a needed a teacher if we saw any glass or cans or even dead animals (thankfully none of these were found!).

With vests and gloves on, we set off, looking for rubbish, sharing with each other what was found and putting it in the rubbish bags. We found lots of little bits of rubbish and some big bits too – a roof tile and some wire fencing!  The children were quick to point out rubbish which was unsafe for them to touch – lots of glass, some lighters and even some batteries.  A button was even found on the ground, but Mrs Richards and Carly decided that wasn't rubbish - it was treasure!  And so the ideas began as to what the button could be used for.

The children displayed great care and thoughtfulness as we cleaned up Deborah Grove Reserve, with 7 bags all full at the end of our search.  Thank you to our Curiosity children and family helpers for helping Clean Up Australia!

Eleanor – I was busy.  I liked picking up the rubbish.  I was excited.

Muno Muno – I picked up plastic. We cared the land.  We’re saving the dolphins and elephants too.

Millie - I like picking up rubbish because it’s so dirty.
