Changes to student reports

At Box Hill High School, parents and carers receive semesterly reports at the end of Term 2 and Term 4 and interim reports at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. We are making changes to these reports this year that are designed to make them more parent-friendly in response to parent feedback.

It is important to us that we provide parents with the information that they need to understand how their child is going at school.

In each report, parents and carers are provided with ongoing feedback about how regularly their child displays five key behaviours that are critical for learning. The behaviours that are reported on are:

  • Effort and participation in class
  • Acts on feedback
  • Effective use of class time
  • Homework and preparedness for class, and
  • Respectful behaviour with others.

The selection of these factors was based on the behaviours that we know support students to succeed in their learning and on parent focus group feedback. An example of how these will be reported is shown below.

Semester Reports also provide parents and carers with feedback on students’ learning progress and achievement. This includes the results of key assessment tasks, Victorian Curriculum progression for students in Years 7 to 10, and VCE unit results for VCE studies.

This year we are introducing a new seven-point grading scale for our reports. A key goal of this grading scale is to address parent feedback that the previous “At standard” grade did not provide sufficient information about a student’s level of achievement. A table showing a rough correspondence between the previous five-point scale and the new seven-point scale is shown below.

Previous reports New reports
Well above standard Outstanding
Above standard Excellent
At standard Very Good
Good
Satisfactory
Below standard Below Standard
Well below standard Unsatisfactory

From this year, reports will no longer include student self-assessment against learning behaviours.

Additional information about student’s performance on assessment tasks and specific guidance for how to improve is available on Compass Learning Tasks.
