BHHS Homework Policy

Last year, we reviewed our Homework & Home Study Policy with staff to ensure that the school had a clear and consistent approach to homework from Year 7 to Year 12. We had noticed that since returning from remote learning and with new teachers joining the school, there was inconsistency in how homework was administered and also a lack of preparation for VCE years (e.g. in revision and home-study routines).

Purpose of homework

  • To prepare for upcoming classes and topics through reading, revision of notes, and review of content
  • To practice the skills learned in class (eg. Math, languages, literacy), or apply new knowledge
  • To enrich or extend knowledge
  • To steadily build study skills and routines in preparation for VCE.

Implementation of the policy

We are running teacher sessions to build consistency and understanding with each teacher team, and next term we will be involving students in focus groups to hear from them about the type and extent of homework across classes. We do not want “busy work” for students just for the sake of having homework, and there is an expectation that students will be provided adequate time to complete any set tasks.

Supporting students

The school runs a Homework Club in the library four nights a week after school from 2:55 pm to 4:15 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to complete tasks with assistance or not take work home.  Teachers are available for support and guidance. Please speak to your child’s year level coordinator if you would like to find out about specific support in literacy or numeracy.

We know that there are reasons why students may struggle to sometimes complete set home study tasks (such as illness, difficulty understanding the task, or other life commitments) and we ask that students talk to their teachers about what is happening for them (parents can also contact the teacher or year level coordinator if there are concerns).

The Homework & Home Study Policy is available in the School Documentation area on Compass, within the Policies folder that sits in the Students & Parents folder.
