Introducing our 2024 School Leaders

School Captain: Sabrina L

Why did you choose to apply to become school captain?

I’ve always had a love for leadership, whether that’s been making a speech or organising a team and leading them to our goals. Throughout my time at Box Hill I’ve stepped up to many of the available leadership positions and have always enjoyed giving input to school plans and helping those around me. In Year 11 I was a mentor of the SRC, proceeding from my position of Co-president in Year 10. From this position I was reassured that I could securely leave the council to the new and upcoming representatives, pushing myself up to a new challenge, where I could further help my cohort, the school environment, and students. This, of course, being School Captain.

What do you hope to bring to the position? What does leadership mean to you?

While I hope to bring confidence, organisation and initiative, above all, I hope to bring optimism and selflessness to the position of School Captain. I constantly wish to push myself to support the Prefect Team, and through that the cohort and the school. More than anything, I value the people around me, and want to help them grow and learn as leaders, and as individuals. I know just how much worth a little support and check in can be, so I always strive to bring a smile and cheerful appreciation of my fellow students.

What do you love about Box Hill High School?

There’s plenty of love that I have for Box Hill High School. While I don’t always realise it, this space and community has truly pushed me to grow and change throughout the years. Not only has it been a place for me to learn academically, but also about who I am, what I value, and who I want to be. The people I have met over high school are invaluable and the sense of community that I am welcomed to every single day at Box Hill is absolutely incomparable.

Vice- Captain: Tiyahni D-A

Why did you apply to become school captain?

I applied to become a school captain because I saw the role as an amazing opportunity to collaborate with other school leaders to make a positive impact, advocate for student needs and foster a supportive and inclusive school environment. I wanted to be able to demonstrate my genuine passion for our school by leading others around me, acting as a role model and making positive change to our school.

What do I hope to bring to the position?

In this role, I hope to bring leadership, empathy, and creativity to our school community. With a vison of fostering unity and inclusivity, I hope to enhance student voices, advocate for their needs, and create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Through collaboration and effective communication, I hope to inspire positive change and encourage a culture of respect and belonging within the school and its community.

What do you love about Box Hill High School?

There are so many things that I love about our school but one that really stands out to me is the number of incredible opportunities we have at BHHS. We have such a diverse range of opportunities from camps to clubs, to music, to sport and so on. I personally have learnt and grown so much from of some of these opportunities and would encourage every student to get involved and give every opportunity a go!

What does leadership mean to you?

To me leadership is about inspiring and empowering others through actions, compassion, and a clear vision. It involves supporting and leading those around you to reach their full potential while fostering an environment of trust, collaboration, and respect. I believe leadership is about being approachable and always open to feedback and growth, someone who you can trust to do the right thing for the school and strive to create positive change for everyone around them.

Vice- Captain: Ambrose S

Why did you apply to become school captain? I applied as I wanted to have an input as a member of the prefect team and provide my ideas and feedback about the VCE Vocational Major and school-based apprenticeship program. I also would like to use my knowledge and experience to give back to the community and make positive change.

What do you hope to bring to the position? I hope to bring my leadership and communication skills that I have developed from previous roles, including my participation in the School Technical Crew, volunteer work with St John Ambulance, and time being a junior class captain. Additionally, I hope my friendliness and openness will take me far in being an effective liaison between school leadership and the wider community.

What do you love about Box Hill High School? I love the diversity that Box Hill High offers. We are a multicultural school, we have a wide range of learning experiences and a variety of extracurricular and leadership opportunities.

What does leadership mean to you? Leadership means being able to have your say and a say on behalf of others. Seeing through change that you strive for and hopefully leaving a positive impact.
