The Peaks Challenge

Our own teacher Mr Braeden Johnstone recently took on a journey like no other - venturing into the heart of challenge and triumph in the Peaks Challenge Falls Creek. Here is his story:

"Since its inception in 2010, this annual cycling event has stood as a testament to endurance, pushing cyclists to their limits and then some. And this year, I decided to throw my hat into the ring.

Imagine this: 235 kilometres of twisting roads, 4,400 metres of elevation gain – almost half the height of Mount Everest – all within a tight 13-hour window. It's not just a test of physical strength, but a trial of mental resilience. And let me tell you, it was one heck of a ride.

We kicked off before the sun had fully risen, starting from the quaint village of Falls Creek at 6:45 am. From there, it was a rollercoaster of a journey, weaving down Falls Creek into and through Mount Beauty, Tawonga Gap, Harrietville, Mount Hotham, Dinner Plains, Omeo, and back to Falls Creek. Nine hours and twenty-one minutes later, I finally crossed the finish line – weary but exhilarated.

There were moments – plenty of them – when the road stretched out endlessly, when my muscles begged for mercy, and when doubt crept in. But in those moments of darkness, I found my resolve. I tapped into the hours of training and pushed through the pain.

Looking back, I can confidently say it was one of the toughest challenges I've ever tackled. But you know what? It was also one of the most rewarding. That sense of accomplishment as I crossed the finish line was like nothing else. It reminded me that with grit and determination, anything is achievable.

To the students at Box Hill High School – wherever you are on your own journey – I encourage you to keep pushing forward. Whether you're striving for academic excellence, pursuing your passions, or seeking personal growth, remember that the path may be rugged, but the destination is worth it.

Success isn't about avoiding obstacles; it's about facing them head-on with unwavering strength. So keep pedalling, keep pushing, and never lose sight of your aspirations. Because in the end, the joy of reaching your dreams will far outweigh the challenges encountered along the way.

 Onwards, everyone. The peak awaits."
