Sustainability Club

To kick off 2024 the Sustainability Club once again ran a Sustainability Week from March 18-22, hosting a variety of events and activities to promote more sustainable living around the school as well as at home.

The week began with a competitive waste-themed game on the oval, creating an interactive learning space where students sorted different ‘waste’ items (represented by bean bags) into the correct ‘bins’ (represented by hula hoops), fostering awareness about proper waste management. This activity was inspired by the upcoming introduction of composting at our school, which will be advertised more later in the year.

Tuesday featured a hands-on activity where students got creative by making their own beeswax wraps, promoting eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics. Wednesday’s highlight was a workshop on making recycled paper, encouraging resourcefulness and innovation in reusing materials. Thursday delighted the taste buds with a plant-based bake sale, showcasing delicious treats that are not only tasty but also environmentally conscious (see the results in the banner of this page!).

Wrapping up the week on Friday was an Op Shop free dress day, promoting sustainable fashion choices. The absolute highlight of the week was the fashion parade where our school prefects strutted their stuff in outfits curated from thrifted items, embracing second-hand fashion.

Friday was also National Walk/Ride2School Day, so the Sustainability Club encouraged the whole school cohort to consider alternative modes of transport in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and encourage physical activity. Most impressively, Ms Kertes and Ms Chesterton walked 14 kilometres to school in order to promote the cause

Finally, the week was concluded with Earth Hour, which was observed during period 5 on the Friday afternoon when all classrooms and offices powered down their lights and appliances, symbolising a commitment to energy conservation and environmental consciousness.
