Year 2 News

Secret Pen-Pals

Over the last two weeks the Year Two students have been having a lot of fun writing letters to each other. Each student was assigned a pen-pal at random from the Year 2 cohort with whom they had to exchange letters, without giving away their own name. Within the letters, students were tasked with asking effective questions to help them solve the identity of their mystery pen-pal.

This caused great excitement and anticipation as they read their letters! The activity has been a fun way for students to learn how to create effective questions, set out letters and revise correct punctuation in their writing. The students can’t wait to solve the mystery of their secret pen-pal!

Learning Task

The students all worked really hard today to complete their second Learning Task for the year. To tie in with our current Unit of Inquiry ‘How we Express Ourselves’ and our ‘Secret Pen-Pal’ activity, students were asked to write a letter to one of the characters from the Inside Out movie, such as Joy, Anger or Sadness.

They all did an amazing job writing to their chosen character, reflecting on how that emotion makes them feel and how their bodies react to that feeling while also asking well-thought-out questions. Feedback will be provided via compass in the coming week, and we encourage you to take the time to read the letter and discuss the feedback with your child.

How we Express Ourselves

The students have continued to enjoy our current unit of inquiry ‘How we express ourselves’ while focusing on a different emotion from the Inside Out movie each week. The students have learnt to define, identify and use strategies to help manage their own emotions while also having a better understanding of how they affect the way we communicate with others.

The students have also worked collaboratively with the Year 4 students yesterday to create a Power Point presentation to inform others of effective strategies to help manage their emotions. These presentations will be shared with the Year One students over the next week.

The students and teachers are very excited to celebrate the end of our unit of inquiry this Friday by dressing up as characters from the Inside Out movie. Classrooms will be open for parents to visit (9am to 9:30am) and see the students’ work. Later in the day, students will complete fun Inside Out activities before watching the characters in action with a viewing of the movie!

 Maths - Time

This term the Year Two students have been learning about ‘time’ during our maths sessions. They have been practising using a calendar, revising the months of the year and are now starting to focus on how to tell the time on an analogue and digital clock.

We are beginning with o’clock and half past and will continue throughout the year, working our way to quarter past and quarter to. To assist your child, we encourage you to make reference to your analogue and digital clocks at home. The following website has a great resource for setting and telling the time.

Harmonica Incursion

On Tuesday the students thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Harp’s a Breeze’ Incursion. The students listened attentively to Chrissy while he demonstrated how to correctly use and play the harmonica.

By the end of the incursion the students learnt a little tune which sounded amazing. There are certainly quite a few talented and budding musicians in Year 2!!
