Year 2 Spotlight

A Wonderful Start to Year 2!
What a wonderful start to the year the students have had! The Year 2s have enjoyed meeting new friends and connecting with old ones, as well as getting to know their new teachers.
Writing
This term, Year 2 students have explored writing recounts, poetry, and had the concept of 'seed idea' writing introduced to them. In seed idea writing, the students are given a picture prompt and asked to respond to it using their senses. They then have the opportunity to extend their ideas more into a piece of writing. The following are some examples of the process.
Picture Prompt for Seed Idea: Diver
Student responses
I can see a scuba diver getting a lot of rubbish from the ocean.
I feel very sad.
I think that it is a very bad idea because it’s hurting the animals in the sea.
~ Mali, 2B
I can see rubbish in the sea and a scuba diver.
I feel shocked to see all that rubbish in the water.
I think, how did it end up there?
~ Max, 2B
Picture Prompt for Seed Idea: Frog
Student responses
Students in Year 2 have explored ‘parts of speech’ to strengthen their understanding of sentence structure as part of their literacy program. We have recently been focusing on adjectives.
Here are some examples of students' work.
Inquiry
This term the Year 2 students focused on building their historical knowledge by examining changes in technology with an emphasis on changes in the home, and toys.
The students had an entertaining and hands-on ‘Toys From The Past’ incursion on Friday 21 March to complete their studies on ‘Then and Now’ history inquiry unit.
Reflection of the Toys Over Time incursion:
The toy incursion was great. Looking at toys then and now was so much fun. But the best thing was we could play with them.
After each ten minutes, we would hear about how the toys were made.
My favourite toy was the marbles and the marble set at the building station. It was so much fun because building these big tunnels that marbles go in is…well…crazy!
I also loved the yo-yos. They were at the skills station which was my favourite station, and me and Edward tried them together.
It was mind blowing seeing all these amazing toys!
