Library News

Welcome back to the library for Term 2! A big thank you to all our families who participated in our Holiday Reading Challenges organised by our teachers and literacy coordinators. It was wonderful to see students of St Patrick’s read hundreds of books over the holiday break.

It has been lovely to have students back in the library and see their enthusiasm for borrowing in Term 2. We thank parents for encouraging students to remember their library bags each week and for supporting them in their reading journey.

2025 CBCA Book of the Year Awards

Each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia presents awards to Australian books of literary merit for outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature.

On 25 March the CBCA announced the 2025 Book of the Year Awards Shortlist. The Books of the Year are grouped into the following categories:

  • CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
  • CBCA Picture Book of the Year
  • Eve Pownall Award
  • CBCA Award for New Illustrator

On 15 August the CBCA Book of the Year Award Honours and Winners will be announced at a national event hosted by the National Library of Australia.

Staff at St Patrick’s are often asked for recommendations of quality books for students to read. The CBCA website is well worth a visit. It offers extensive lists of previous book winners with reviews, interviews and themes. We encourage you to take a look at the 2025 Book of the Year Awards Shortlist here: https://cbca.org.au/2025-shortlist/

CBCA Book of the Year Awards at St Patrick’s

Each year St Patrick’s purchases the CBCA shortlisted books. Our collections arrived this week and library staff have been busy preparing the books for the classroom. In the coming months students at St Patrick’s will explore the 2025 shortlisted books in class with their teachers. Our very talented Mrs Ng makes the books come alive with our art students and our drama students use the books as inspiration for their productions. We look forward to sharing these exciting events with you during Book Week in August.

Many thanks to some of our Premier’s Reading Challenge students who previewed the shortlisted books this week. We look forward to hearing your reviews!
