Year 5/6 Bulletin

Big Idea- ERP

Being an active citizen in this country allows me to enjoy the benefits of living in a democratic country.

Driving Questions:

  1. What is an active citizen?
  2. Why is my country democratic?
  3. How can I take proactive steps to fully maximise the benefits of living in a democracy?

Overview

Throughout this term, the students have been developing their understanding of what it means to be an active citizen in a democratic country. They have explored democracy, the levels of government, the importance of laws, and how individuals can play a role in shaping society. Through discussions, research, and interactive activities, the students have been building their knowledge of how change happens and how they can contribute.

This week, the focus shifted to Planning for Civic Action, where the students considered ways they could address civic issues in their community.

Whole- The lesson began with a class discussion on how individuals and groups can create change. The students explored real-world examples of civic action, including petitions, awareness campaigns, and community initiatives. They considered the impact of actions such as writing to decision-makers, raising awareness through social media, and engaging with local representatives.

Small-In small groups, the students worked together to develop action plans to address varying issues. Their ideas included designing informative posters, delivering presentations on important topics, writing persuasive letters, and organising school-based initiatives such as a police incursion or a community service project. Some groups considered reaching out to local representatives to gain insight into government decision-making and its impact on the community.

Whole-To conclude, the students presented their ideas to the class and received feedback from their peers. They reflected on the feasibility and effectiveness of their proposed actions, refining their plans based on class discussions.

As we continue, we encourage families to engage in conversations with their children about civic involvement and explore ways to take action together. This can involve discussing current events, supporting community initiatives, or assisting with your child's action plan. These small steps can help foster a deeper understanding of active citizenship and highlight our role in shaping society.
