Assistant Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers of the BEPS community,

As we come to the end of an engaging term of learning, we are excited to share some of the key focus areas that your child/ren have been exploring. This term, our students have worked on developing their recount writing skills. They have learned how to structure a recount, using time connectives and descriptive language to recall events in a clear and engaging way. Students have reflected on personal experiences and explored ways to share their stories with others, including memoirs, blogs and journaling.

In mathematics, students have deepened their understanding of counting, place value, additive thinking and measurement. Engaging in fluency, problem solving and reasoning tasks has not only improved their mathematical skills, but has strengthened their ability to approach and solve complex number-related challenges.

Our big idea for the term, “I am an Eco-Warrior,” has inspired students to explore the importance of environmental conservation and how they can take action to protect our planet. Through inquiry-based learning, students have researched sustainable practices, identified environmental issues in their local community, and created eco-friendly prototypes. We are proud of the hard work shown by all our students this term.

VHAP / John Monash

This term, selected Year 4, 5 and 6 students have engaged in opportunities to extend their learning through the Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) and collaboration with John Monash Science School. Students in the program applied their critical and creative thinking, whilst participating in challenging activities that included problem-solving, experimental design and developing their writing craft. We look forward to the continuation of these opportunities, with selected students focusing on extending their numeracy and literacy skills in Term 2’s VHAP.

Parents Association

This week the Parents Association held their Annual General Meeting to welcome new committee members and to elect office bearers. The Parents Association is proud to announce our 2025 president is Sandra, our treasurer is Susan and the secretary is Vijay. The BEPS Parents Association is a volunteer group within Burwood East Primary School who help to further enhance the sense of community at the school through social events, fundraising for school improvement initiatives, and creating a link between the school and the families of the students.

This year the Parents Association has organised two fundraisers for Term 1, our Sushi Lunch Deal and our Bakers Delight Hot Cross Buns. Thank you to our families who have supported these two events. The school raised collectively $461. The money raised will go towards student resources, including sporting equipment.

Next term we will be running the Mother’s Day Stall, where students can buy something special for their mum, grandma or special person. More information will be shared at the beginning of Term 2.

Smile Squad

The Smile Squad team from healthAbility are coming to our school in the first four weeks of Term 2. Smile Squad is the Victorian Government free school dental program. This means ALL students can get a free dental check-up, preventive services, and treatment at school.

Information, including the link to the online consent form has been shared via Compass. Paper copies of the consent form can be made available. Please contact the school office if you would like to request one. Please note, the electronic consent form can be translated into more than 100 languages, and the paper form is currently available in 13 languages.

Holidays

With holidays commencing, this is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your child/ren. Please see some ideas from the Raising Children website:

Everyday activities to do with children: Sometimes you can create special times and have fun as part of your everyday family life. Here are some ideas:

  • Let your child choose a dinner recipe that you can cook together.
  • Go shopping for food or groceries together and let your child help to make decisions, pay for things and have conversations with shop assistants.
  • Eat meals together as a family and chat about your day.
  • Make car trips fun by playing ‘I spy’, ‘Spotto’ or ‘Who can see the next car with a number plate that makes a word?’ You could sing along to music together too.
  • Read books or tell stories with your child at bedtime.
  • Point out things that you know your child likes as you go about the day, and talk about these things with your child – for example, a cool car or a beautiful tree.

Play activities and games to share with children: When it comes to play and your school-age child, try to let your child choose what to play or let your child take the lead with play. You’ll soon find out what your child enjoys or what sparks their imagination.

Here are simple ideas to get you started:

  • Play word games and make up jokes and riddles together. You can start with jokes like ‘Knock knock’ or ‘Why did the chicken, frog, cow (whatever makes you laugh) cross the road?’ Then get your child to make up their own.
  • Play board games like ‘snakes and ladders’, dominoes and simple card games. This helps your child learn to take turns and play fair.
  • Spend time making things together, like drawing a picture or making a collage from photos cut out of a magazine.

Outdoor activities to enjoy with children:

Outdoor play is fun, and it’s good exercise too. Here are some ideas for getting outside with your child:

  • Make time to go to the park together – walk or ride a bike there, if you can.
  • Give your child the chance to practise skills and get better at things like climbing and catching a ball.
  • Lie on the grass and look for shapes or animals in the clouds.
  • Go for a walk around your neighbourhood.
  • On a dark, clear night, go outside and look at the stars.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday,

Teri and Edwina
