Year 4/5/6

Wow, together we have survived an action packed term 1, and as we wrap up the last two weeks of Term 1, I am thrilled to share some of the exciting highlights and achievements from our classroom!

Religion

During this liturgical period, our students have been preparing for Easter. Together we have explored the themes of Lent, uncovering the meaning behind its colours and symbols, and the significant events of Holy Week. The students also studied the stations of the cross to deepen their understanding of Lent. The symbolic colours were used to create stunning artworks for the Stations of the Cross, using simple lines and the vibrant colours of Lent to create abstract art pieces. This project, titled "Lent: A Time to Make Choices," has been a wonderful way for students to express their understanding of this sacred time (S2Y4B SLA 3, 4, 5; SLT 3, 4; Art CA2-VIS-01, CA3-VIS-01).

Mathematics

In Maths, our students have been enthusiastically working on fractions. We shared a delightful activity where we created a birthday fruit cake using watermelon, grapes, and oranges to explore fractions such as 1/4, 1/2, 1/5, 1/8, and 1/10. Additionally, the students explored fractions by coral counting and creating fractions using geometric shapes. Just for fun, we used a jar of chocolate Easter eggs to estimate and discuss fractions, and maybe we ate just a few! As a warm-up task, the students calculated the week's run club laps, incorporating addition, place value, and decimal counting. Additionally the students have been practicing their mathematics knowledge using maths space (Stage 2: MAO-WM-01, MA2-PF-01; Stage 3: MAO-WM-01, MA3-RQF-01, MA3-RQF-02).

English

Our English lessons have been buzzing with activity as students focused on persuasive writing, linked to the novel "War Horse." The students have been passionately writing persuasive texts on the topic "Should Horses Have Been Used in WW1?" We were incredibly fortunate to have the Light Horse visit Tumbarumba, where the Lighthorsemen, travelling across two states to honour General Henry George Chauvel, provided a real-life connection to our studies.

Highlights of the Last Two Weeks

The past two weeks have been packed with excitement and numerous activities:

  • A Laurel Hill excursion for Sculpture by the Sea
  • An incursion with Sculpture by the Sea
  • An AFL clinic
  • A visit from the Light Horse
  • Robot building and coding sessions
  • Stations of the Cross

Despite the many disruptions, our students have shown amazing perseverance and resilience. Their ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic learning environment is truly commendable.

Thank you to the students for making this first Term so wonderful. I look forward to more exciting learning adventures in the terms to come.
