CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN
Recently, the senior girls football team and the boys netball competed in inter school sports. The girls had some amazing team spirit and competed with the utmost integrity. It was great to see so many people getting into it on the day and enjoying the competition. Our senior boys baseball team also competed, however, through a series of unfortunate events came third to Maribynong and Frankston despite their best efforts.
Term 2 has sent year 12s into a mixture of studying, stressing and eventually relief once SACs are over, just to be onto the next one. But in this dark doom that is Term 2, a hero emerges; a bright shining light for year 12s… PANCAKE WEDNESDAY! Who doesn’t want a warm fluffy pancake, with the potential to even appear on the Instagram page? I truly appreciate Pancake Wednesday; as someone who has a period 1 Wednesday off, I genuinely look forward to that packet of joy, warming up my day. I would like to thank Dionne, Evie, Tanvi, and Ayesha who run Pancake Wednesday for their dedication, bringing joy to everyone.
I had my last Cross Country on Friday the 23rd of May. Cross Country has been a source of excitement, worry and nerves. I have had days with a bright shining sun or pouring down with rain (like this most recent one). However, what never seems to go away is the way people get around each other. Everyone shows appreciation for the athleticism, and stamina for the runners, the encouragement from teachers and spectators and everyone else who is involved.
I love these events, as they truly show the McKinnon Magic that is to be found within our community. People talk, engage and just enjoy themselves no matter if it's raining, if they despise running or have a Physics SAC later that day (maybe that’s just me). Anyhow, I know I will miss these events later and implore those who still have it to take advantage of these opportunities. Talk with new people, go crazy in your dress ups, and have fun!

JUNIOR CAPTAIN
Model UN was an eye-opening experience which provided the participating students with a deeper insight and understanding of how the United Nations work. It was an amazing opportunity to collaborate with students from other schools and propose new ideas on how to battle climate change, and it felt practically identical to the actual process of passing on new proposals. Representing different countries also gave my team and I some knowledge on our country’s history; we needed to know background information about it to understand which causes would benefit our team and which ones would not. It’s safe to say that everyone participating has gained lots of newfound knowledge on compromising and negotiating agreements between countries!
There are so many amazing opportunities McKinnon has to offer, and one specifically for Year 9s in Term 3 is on the rise. The Alpine School of Leadership offers a certain number of students out of the year 9 grade to attend and live at one of their multiple campuses. McKinnon has secured 5 spots this year. With students from many different schools in Victoria, it’s guaranteed that some lasting friendships and bonds will be made. The school is specifically tailored to teaching students about key qualities in leadership, along with providing exciting activities and unforgettable memories. My fellow candidates and I are extremely excited and grateful to be attending. If you’re going into year 9 in the future, you may consider applying too! You never know...
