YEAR 9 VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN - DIGITAL LETTER DESIGN
Students in Year 9 Design were tasked with creating a line drawn letter in Adobe Illustrator that would feature images that made up the first initial of a city they had chosen. Research into architectural features, food, cultural events, clothing, transport and the cities themselves was undertaken, to understand what imagery could be used to visually represented the selected place and entice people to visit.
BRIEF TO STUDENTS
‘WideWorld’ is an organisation that aims to broaden the horizons and cultural opportunities for students in years 9 – 11 by offering exchange programs in countries all over the world. The provide students with a host family who they live with for 4 – 12 weeks. During their stay, students are emersed in a different culture. They learn a new language, go to school, see the sights of the cities and towns and experience the rich culture of the country including the food, local traditions, festivals and wear garments that reflect the culture they are experiencing. The aim of the program is to expand students’ cultural awareness, empathy and understanding whilst provide opportunities for emotional, mental and physical growth.
To promote the idea to students in Australian schools, they would like you to design a letter that features simple, line drawn images that relate to the selected city. The line drawing will feature on a new set of promotional postcards that highlights what is unique about the exchange city. The postcards will be used as advertising material and will be distributed to schools. The graphic (line drawing) will also feature digitally on the company’s website as an icon that can be clicked on to find out more information about the opportunities in that country or city.
This task extended the student’s skills with Adobe Illustrator and refined their use of the design principles, especially scale, balance, cropping and figure/ground.
Enjoy the final presentations where the students showcase their digital skills and effective use of visual language.
