YEAR 7 ICT AND YEAR 9 CODING

It’s been an exciting and productive term for our Year 7 ICT and Year 9 Coding students!

Year 7 ICT students explored cyber safety through Grok Academy, learning how personal data can be exposed online and how to protect it. They’re now developing essential digital literacy skills through a Research Project focused on investigating topics, evaluating sources, and citing references correctly. They will be using this research to design their own website.

Year 9 Coding students wrapped up their Python programming unit, strengthening their problem-solving and coding skills. They’ve now moved on to using Anvil, where they’ll build interactive web apps that bring their creative ideas to life.

Now, let’s hear it from the students themselves:

ICT Term 2

ICT has always been an entertaining and innovative subject. One of my favourite topics we've done so far has been Grok Learning and the online security sessions. Grok Learning helps us understand everyday problems—like what to do if your password gets leaked. The social media unit was a real eye-opener. It showed how easily someone can find out your password, location, or address just by looking at pictures, captions, and comments.

The current unit, making a website about a migrant’s story, has been captivating. I’ve chosen to write about my grandma, who migrated from Northern Ireland. Through this project, I’ve learned a lot about Northern Ireland, the polio pandemic, and the tensions that divided Ireland. I chose my grandma because she had polio as a child but still went on to become deputy mayor in Australia. What a comeback! I’m really excited to then use my research to make my own website.

Yr 9 Coding

For our second unit in Year 9 Coding, we covered the basics of the Python programming language. Python’s popularity lies in its readability and relative ease of learning—and yes, sometimes what we had to code came easily. But other times, one problem could have my brain running in circles and leave me wanting to pull my hair out. Still, this kind of picking apart and putting things back together was fun, especially when everything clicked into place and the code finally worked. Our next unit involves using some of those basic skills we've learned to design and develop apps using the online platform, Anvil. Although the words print, input, and if are now burned into the backs of my eyelids, I’m all the better for it.

Yr 9 Coding

The Python unit was great because we got to learn a range of useful coding skills. I really like using Grok Academy because we get to create our own code and unlock some fun little features. We've just started a new project where we’ll build an app using Anvil and apply the coding skills we’ve learned. I’m looking forward to designing a website about one of my favourite topics—maybe a site introducing different aircraft models, something about science, or even a sport-themed website.
