A warm welcome to our Weeden Heights community
Welcome back to term two! I hope that you all had a fabulous break over Easter and got to spend some special time as a family. We have had a wonderful start to term two and the students have settled back into their learning well.
I would like to congratulate our student leaders on their Anzac Day ceremony which was conducted last Thursday at a special gathering with the school in our hall. Our school captains and ambassador’s led a moving service to honour our armed forces, health professionals and animals that served Australia and New Zealand.
Remembering on Anzac Day always brings a tear to my eye but it is critical that our younger generations understand the freedoms that we enjoy here in Australia are because of the sacrifices made by others. Respect for our country and our flag is reinforced clearly at assemblies.
School Oath
Respect is one of our school values and we demonstrate this in many ways. We observe Anzac Day and we also acknowledge this each week at assembly. For new parents and as a reminder to others, at assembly we have a school oath that all students pledge.
I hope this helps your child to learn the oath.
Uniform
I’m sure that you have all noticed a change in the weather! Students are now able to wear their winter uniform and they are not required to wear their hats as of May 1. They may of course choose to wear hats. Please remember that tights or leggings are not to be worn with our summer dress. Girls are required to wear blue track pants or the tunic with dark blue tights/blue leggings & blue socks.
Annual Report and Annual General Meeting
Our Annual Report for 2024 has been written and is available on our school website. The students at Weeden Heights PS achieved incredible results which ensured we were named in the top 20 highest performing government schools. (I’m so proud!) The report provides data that compares our results to similar schools and the state. You will see just how well we performed and how far in front we are from other schools. You will be impressed.
Later on this year we will conduct the Annual General Meeting at an open school council meeting on 16 June. The 2024 Annual Report will be tabled and presented to the community as a part of the agenda. It will occur towards the end of the meeting around 8pm and it will highlight our great successes for the year.
If you intend to participate in the school council meeting which includes the AGM then please email the school to confirm your attendance by Friday 30 May. Everyone is welcome and School Council meeting will begin promptly at 6.30pm that night.
Election BBQ help!
On Saturday, the school is running a BBQ as we are a voting venue for the election. This a great way to make money for the school. We are short of volunteers and need your help if you can spare some time. At the moment we have 3 people for the morning and 2 for the afternoon. We actually need 5 people to assist each shift. Please refer to the COMPASS message that shows the link to the volunteers portal if you can help out. Thank you in advance!
Out of School Hours Care (OSHC)- After the Bell
Just a reminder that we have a before and after school care program that operates from our school hall. This service is there to support our working families and After the Bell now has an educator hired for our school. There were a few teething issues last year as we moved from our school program to the service but these are now ironed out.
Please consider enrolling your children into the service if you need care.
We would also really love to run a holiday program for our families but it does require numbers to run a program. Please check your calendars now for the next holiday period and consider potential days for care or even socialisation, particularly if you only have one child.
The service is here to support our school community so let’s support the service so that it remains at our school and within our community.
Education Week (19 May to 23 May)
We are currently organising our education week celebrations. This year’s theme is ‘Celebration of Cultures ’ and highlights the diversity of our communities and the importance of every child feeling safe and welcome at school.
Please lock into your calendars Wednesday 14 May (week before) for our open night and invite your friends and family to take a look through our amazing school. Our annual Grandparents morning tea will also occur on this day so look out for an invitation coming home soon.
Prep Enrolment 2026 - Sibling Enrolments
I now require our Weeden Heights PS parents, who have children that are ready to start prep in 2026 to begin the enrolment process using the INSIGHT platform. Siblings of students who are currently at Weeden Heights PS have a guaranteed place for Prep in 2026 however, we still need these students to enrol and follow the Department of Education timelines.
I continue to conduct school tours on a Wednesday morning for families interested in attending Weeden Heights PS or have already enrolled. Please encourage your friends and neighbours to enter their enrolment on the INSIGHT platform Prep in 2026. Enrolments are now due.
Our highly successful Bright Beginnings transition program commences at the end of August this year and we don’t want you or any future families to miss out on the opportunity.
Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday 11 May! A big thanks in advance to our wonderful PFA who have organised the Mother’s Day stall for next Friday (9 May) I hope that all of our mothers/mother figures and the special people in our life are spoilt on this day.
Until next time……
