Secondary School

Welcome back to an exciting new term in Secondary School! I hope that families were able to enjoy the break. Last term ended with some very joyous celebrations, which were a fantastic reflection on our culture at Great Southern Grammar.

Mojos Showcase - Fremantle

In Week Ten, two key events really stood out. On Wednesday night, a number of our senior musicians performed in one of Fremantle’s preeminent venues, Mojos. The students performed to a big crowd and had a wonderful experience. The venue doubled as an alumni event, and a number of our past students also performed on stage, as did a couple of our staff! It was not only a showcase of our extraordinary music program at GSG, but it was a celebration of our community.

Cross Country

The other event that really stood out in Week One was the Whole School Cross Country carnival. It was great to watch the younger and older students interaction with each other, especially watching the Secondary Students lining the finish line to cheer on the ECC students, also watching the House war cries and seeing students take part in novelty events together, such as the easter egg and spoon race. Thank you to all the parents who made it down to watch.

We have our Interschool Cross Country for Secondary School in Week Two, Tuesday 6 May, and GSG is lucky enough to be hosting that event from 12.00pm to 2.30pm.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival

This term, we are celebrating another Whole School carnival, the Athletics carnival, in Week Five, Friday 30 May. I ask that all parents check the family calendars and ensure that this one is in there. It is set to be another great event, and we would love to see as many parents there as possible, including boarding parents who travel to Albany to watch the carnival before collecting their child for the trip home.

Please be mindful that it is on the Friday before the midterm break. It is expected that all students attend this day, and the results of these events will be the results that we consider regarding interschool selection. If a student is not able to make it, please communicate with me in writing.

Foundation Day

Next week, we celebrate the School’s birthday, Foundation Day. Like any birthday, we are also linking it with our School Foundation Annual Giving Day, hoping for every member of our community to contribute to our Spirit of Grammar Scholarships, which help families who might otherwise not be able to provide their children with a Grammar education.

From a cultural perspective, it is important that we have diversity within our student body and continue to champion the notion that an excellent education should be within reach for aspirational families that share our values. Please be assured that Foundation Day donations will go to an excellent cause. We invite our families to share in our Foundation Day celebrations by attending the assembly at 1.45pm on Friday 9 May, followed immediately after by the Running of the Flags.
