4/5/6

During writing sessions, students in grades 4, 5, and 6 have been working hard to persuade their audience that the Yahoo (Hairy Man) from our focus text is either a terrifying beast or a misunderstood creature. They have been concentrating on using authority in their writing, ensuring it is trustworthy and reliable. This means they are using only facts from the text and have started to annotate in a basic way to indicate that the information has been sourced from another text.

As you are all aware, the cast has been decided for our Peter Pan musical, and the students have already been working hard to learn their lines and get into character. They are very excited about this performance and have been highly engaged in our drama lessons, focusing on symbols and themes to better understand the storyline.

Below are some action shots of our first walkthrough rehearsal.

Year 5 and 6 Maths

We have continued to grow our understanding of time and have discussed the key words of endurance, lapsed time and duration. We had an opportunity to explore a Sydney train timetable which first appeared to be very complicated! To celebrate the end of the unit the students were set the task of designing a timetable for three astronauts at the International Space Station, keeping in mind all the set guidelines from the medical team, technical team and control!

This week we begin our unit around the measure of length with a focus on the units of metres and kilometres. Pictured are students working on the astronaut timetable.

Year 4 Maths

This week we ended our multiplication unit. The children have learnt about many great strategies in solving multiplication problems including using arrays and focusing on the commutative property of multiplication. It has been great to see the children grow in confidence throughout this unit in being able to use strategies to solve various multiplication problems.

Another thing the children have started this week during our warm up, is doing Solve Emoji problems. This is something that they can also do at home to build their problem solving skills.
