NAIDOC Art Project
On Wednesday 26thJuly, First Nations students at TLSC were invited to come together for a new and exciting opportunity, to create artwork that will be displayed in an exhibition hosted by Watergardens Shopping Centre as part of NAIDOC Week 2024 from Sunday 7 July to Friday 14 July.
Lee-Anne Clarke, Koorie Engagement Support Officer (KESO) and artist, ran the session, discussing her own choices as an artist, different cultural symbols, and stories to tell and helped encourage and guide students in their designs!
The artwork was based on the NAIDOC Theme for this year – “KEEP THE FIRE BURNING! BLAK, LOUD AND PROUD”. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of the First Nations Culture – with a Fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This type of event has never happened before in our area, so it was great to see 7 of our First Nations students get involved and produce some wonderful paintings to have displayed at Watergardens over the holidays!
Well done to Jess Watcho, Joshua Serra, Ryan Androas, Lilli-Rose Androas, Jayvhan Christian, Charlotte Christian and Maddisyn Smeaton on your participation and contributions to the inaugural NAIDOC Art Project.
