Rugby Report

The past few weeks have seen some tremendous outcomes for our Girls Rugby 7s program. Our girls were incredibly successful in their games in Bathurst and were fit and ready to put on a great show in Dubbo. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas. In a great sign for our program we recently had 13 girls represent the ISA Opens and U16s at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Championships.

Our school was represented by Lucy Carney, Lilly Clarke, Kylis Delaney, Tiari Delaney, Eden Hawker, Maggie Kirby, Katie Lawler, Sophie Luelf, Clancy Murray, Maddie O'Brien, Lucy Robb, Harriett Sinclair and Phoebe Smith. These girls did an amazing job and as such we had a further six girls selected to represent CIS at the upcoming NSW Schools Championships. Girls selected in the Opens squads were Lilly Clarke, Eden Hawker and Maggie Kirby, while girls selected in the U16s squads were Maddie O'Brien, Lucy Carney and Tiari Delaney. Given this is our first year as having Girls Rugby as a full winter sport, the achievement of these girls is amazing and we applaud them for their selections.

The boys Rugby trial season is now complete. Our boys have managed to gain combination, cohesion and some outstanding mateship through the past five weeks of trials. All teams have tasted some form of success and this will hold us in good stead for when the first round of the ISA Competition begins with an away trip against St Patrick's. The culture and pride we are developing was on full display at our most recent home game against Cranbrook. The huge crowd of students were vocal all day with countless loud chants, and the way the 1st XV celebrated with the crowd after the win showed something special is brewing here at Kinross Wolaroi. Long may this continue into what will be a tough ISA Competition.

Finally, we learned the sad news of the passing of Old Boy, Greg Hedley. Greg played in our 1st XV for three years and was Captain of Rugby in his final year in 1998. Greg also represented NSW Schoolboys and was a much-loved man at Kinross Wolaroi and around Orange. We send our deepest condolences to his extended family and friends and hope they understand how proud we are that Greg was a Kinross Wolaroi Rugby Man.

Football Report

The U13 and U14 teams have been improving at an amazing speed this season. This is due to both hard work at training and the building of great team culture for both sides.

The U13 team has become an absolute juggernaut with 25 goals being scored in the first 6 games this season. The team has 4 wins, 1 draw and only 1 loss. The midfield and forwards of Jim Jones, Lachie Turnbull, Ed McGilvray, Jock Morgan, Austin Wark and Ewen Kerridge have been outstanding. They run their socks off and their interplay and communication is only improving.

The goals have been shared around, which is a positive as the team is not reliant on just one player for their goals. With the backline of Brooke Howard, Rhys Ervin, Gavin Fan and Sam Adetifa becoming more settled and Goalkeeper Liam Vera there has been a reduction in the amount of goals scored against them. Presently they sit second in the table and their continued improvement and energy should see them well set for the finals this year. Coach Will has been very happy with their positive attitude and is also thankful to Will Watkins for playing up from the U12’s for the team.

The U14 Kinross Wolaroi Football team has demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination in recent matches, significantly improving their season after a challenging start. Following four consecutive losses, the team has gone on a small win streak, showcasing their potential and hard work.

On Saturday 25 May, our U14s secured their first victory of the season with a commanding 3-0 win against Waratah Rebels at Waratah Sports Ground. The match was dominated from start to finish, with the team controlling possession, displaying outstanding defensive skills, and goalkeeper George Nash pulling off incredible saves. Harrison Chapman opened the scoring just before halftime, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break. Nicholas Wood's second-half brace secured the win, marking a turning point for the team.

Last Saturday, the U14s had to play a double header. Starting at 9am against CYMS Gold at Jack Brabham Park in freezing temperatures, the team looked ready for the challenge. Despite a 7-1 loss, the team exhibited remarkable courage and character throughout the game. Facing a formidable opponent with seven Orange Representative players, Kinross Wolaroi matched their opponents' intensity. Our side were unfortunate not to score more, with several shots hitting the post and being blocked by the opposition defenders.

Later that morning, the team faced Waratah Rebels again, this time at home. Quickly overcoming their earlier defeat, Kinross Wolaroi controlled possession and had more shots on goal in the first half, which ended 0-0. In the second half, Harrison Chapman broke the deadlock, giving our side a valuable lead. Although Waratah Rebels equalised five minutes later, Kinross Wolaroi's perseverance paid off. After beating the keeper and tucking the ball into the net, Chapman’s second goal in the last eight minutes secured a well-deserved 2-1 victory.

With these two wins, the U14 Kinross Wolaroi side has temporarily moved up to fourth place in the standings. The team's continuous improvement each week is a testament to their hard work in training and dedication on the pitch.

NSW All Schools Swimming Championships

30-31May

Four Kinross  Wolaroi students represented the CIS Swimming team at the recent NSW All Schools Swimming Championships.

The NSW All Schools competition provides an intense racing environment whereby only nine swimmers in each event (representing the three school associations) compete.

Our students competed to their highest capacity, displaying significant improvement in their race day application from the performances at the CIS Championships in April.

2024 AICES Cross Country

On Thursday 30 May, the School had 20 members compete for the WAS team at the 2024 AICES Cross Country held at the Sydney Equestrian Centre.

We are delighted to congratulate the Kinross Wolaroi team on their outstanding performance at the Cross-Country event. The team's dedication and hard work were evident in their impressive results across various divisions.

In the U15 Girls category, our athletes showcased remarkable determination and teamwork. Alice Dymock led the group, securing a strong 13th place finish, closely followed by Rahni Jarick in 14th place, Alloway Whittle in 17th place, and Anna Childs in 22nd place. Their collective effort reflects the depth of talent and commitment within their team.

Max Horne represented Kinross Wolaroi admirably in the U15 Boys division, achieving a commendable 10th place. His performance was a testament to his hard work and perseverance.

In the Girls U13 division, Paxton Buckerfield delivered an outstanding performance, finishing 4th. Her exceptional run is a source of great pride for the entire school community.

Congratulations to all our athletes for their excellent performances and for representing Kinross Wolaroi with such distinction. We look forward to more successes in future competitions.

KWS Cadet Parade

On Friday 31 May the Kinross Wolaroi School Cadet Unit bade farewell to their Cadet Under Officers for 2023-2024. These Cadets have been with the Unit for six years and have three years of leadership experience to their credit at the end of this time. This is a very special event as we mark their service with a Parade and a formal dinner.

The Cadet unit had been rehearsing for several weeks prior to the event, only to need to pivot at the last minute, moving the Parade to the DPA due to inclement weather. It was a testament to the skill of the leadership group as they managed to rework a routine, manage over 200 cadets and accomplish their mission in the space of Period 6 on Friday afternoon.

Following the Parade a formal Mess dinner was held at the Orange Ex-Services Club with Cadet Under Officers, Parents and dignitaries in attendance. The party was entertained by the Thompson String Quartet from our Performing Arts faculty and heard speeches from the Chair of School Council, the Senior Under Officer and MAJ(AAC) Simon Lun, our Officer Commanding.

We wish our Cadet Under Officers well for their future endeavours and will miss their outstanding leadership both at Home Training and in the Field.
