Year 12 Economics

Year 12 Economics were on the road to Sydney last week for the Annual UBS HSC Economics Conference. After exceptional pizza’s Katoomba on the way through the mountains, we arrived at the Sydney Central YHA, ready and raring for what was to come on Wednesday.

Students were treated to talks from leading economists and market observers who provided great insight to consolidate learning from the HSC course. Leading UBS Economist, George Tharenou, was our first speaker, who provided a broad insight to Global Economic Conditions. George was followed by a panel of HSC Economics markers providing tips on preparing for Trials and HSC exams, which certainly took the attention of the crowd.

Before lunch was the crowd-favourite, 50 Year veteran of the Sydney Morning Herald, Ross Gittins (see below), who provided a light-hearted analysis of the recent Federal Budget. Our final speaker was Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Deputy Head of Economic Analysis, James Holloway. James was able to give great insight to the objectives and the inner workings of the RBA, with a wealth of contemporary insight that enhanced the learning experience.

Recognition must go to all students who took part in the fieldwork, actively engaging in the opportunity that was provided, and being outstanding representatives of the school. Massive thanks also goes to Di Chappel who stepped up at the last minute to provide staffing support – thank you Di!

HSC Geography

The HSC Geographers embarked on the Urban Dynamics case study of Sydney this week. They investigated the changing morphology of Sydney. The first stop was Cabramatta where students  immersed themselves in the culture of the suburb. The Yum Cha lunch that included dumplings, chicken feet and beef tendon were enjoyed by all (at least 75%). The students then completed an urban transect through the CBD of Sydney and attended the VIVID festival. On the final day students investigated the spatial patterns of advantage and disadvantage with a kayak through middle harbour.

The Year 12 Geography students thrived in an outdoor learning environment and were outstanding ambassadors for the school always courteous and keen to learn.
