A Taste of Culture in Years 7 and 8 Language Classes
As part of their food-themed Term 2 language units, Years 7 and 8 French and Chinese students immersed themselves in the rich culinary traditions of these cultures. Through engaging workshops, this blend of language and culture deepened their understanding and appreciation of both the languages and their food traditions. Bon appétit and 用餐愉快 yòng cān yú kuài!
This week we had our French incursion, we learnt all about breakfast foods and different French meals whilst eating a French breakfast! We played a memory game where different foods disappeared on the screen and wrote the disappearing foods on our whiteboards. At the end of the lesson, we were all given a pain au chocolat to enjoy! The main things that I learnt is that ‘au’ means complementing or with, and that the French love big breakfasts!

The Taiwanese food incursion was a super fun activity and a great way to learn about the Taiwanese culture. We looked through various slides, learning about the night food markets in Taiwan, the Taiwanese restaurants in Australia and the different foods they have for each celebration. We were lucky enough to have had three delicious Taiwanese treats, including brown sugar boba ice cream, seaweed rice crackers and pineapple cake. They were all equally delicious, varying from savory to sweet. We had such a great time learning about and eating all the Taiwanese foods!

In the incursion, we learnt about “le goûter” meaning afternoon tea and what the French ate and drank. We went through a slide show explaining proper pronunciation for the foods and masculine and feminine partitive articles. We then ate pain au chocolat to finish of the lesson. Overall, I enjoyed the incursion and the food that came with it, I would love to do another one in the future.

In the French incursion, we learnt about snacks in France and how to say feminine, masculine, and plural foods. There was a series of slides that helped us learn how to identify these foods and how to put them in sentences, we were also able to play a memory game to further enhance our knowledge. At the end we ate pain au chocolat which was very tasty. Overall, the incursion was an amazing experience.

I enjoyed the bubble tea incursion immensely. We enjoyed a nice sweet treat while learning about its origins of Taichung, Taiwan (Where Ms. Yu was born!). I have always loved bubble tea and to enjoy it at school was an experience like none other. 谢谢老师 (xièxiè lǎoshī)!

The bubble tea incursion in Chinese class was very good and entertaining. We were able to learn about the past of bubble tea how it was made and who the creator was. We learnt about how tapioca pearls were added to various types of tea to create bubble tea and how it was originally served to only close customers. At the end of the incursion, we were able to have a taste of tradition with our very own bubble teas.
