YEAR 4

Geography, Oil Spill Task.

To conclude our Geography unit this term, which has been all about sustainability, we took on the job of cleaning up an oil spill! We tried many different ways to test which would be the most successful. We tried water, soap, cotton wool and scooping up the mess.

Check out our pictures to see how we went!

Sensational Science and Technology in Year 4!

To kick off our Science and Technology unit this term, Bridges (forces), we asked the children to design and build the tallest and strongest tower possible. The catch was that they could only use 20 paper straws and 1 metre of tape. What better way to get hooked on a unit than with a STEAM challenge?!

The energy in the room was electric and the discussion that followed the task was nothing short of amazing. We loved listening to the children critique their designs and instantly recognise how they would improve their design should they complete the task again.

Maybe this information will be helpful when we start designing and constructing our very own bridges?  Such clever kids!

Please have a look at some of our tower creation pictures!

PRIMARY DEBATING

This term our Stage 3 Eisteddfod Debating team have had numerous debates against various schools. Yesterday St Nicholas hosted Tamworth Public School and were the affirmative team for the topic, "Sports at school should be voluntary". St Nicholas was declared the winners of the debate and they will now progress to the finals on the weekend. We thank our adjudicator Mrs Thom for spending her time supporting and providing feedback to all students involved.

TAMWORTH EISTEDDFOD

On Tuesday St Nicholas School made great representation with our singing ability.

Our Primary choir sang two contrasting pieces, "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".  We received 2nd place which we were very proud of.

Our Year 1 students sang "Do Re Mi" with many added extras including breaking into two parts and playing with variations of the words.

We presented beautifully in our full school uniform and our behaviour was impeccable.

Thank you to all involved who helped make our entries into a reality: class teachers, our conductor Mrs McGuirk, office staff filling out event planning and Compass notifications and our accompanist Annette Hamilton.

Our singing was tuneful and a pleasure to listen to.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHESS TOURNAMENT

On Wednesday Mr Dimech and Mr Sterling Rodda accompanied 20 chess enthusiasts to the Primary Schools Chess Competition at Tamworth Public School.

Everyone enjoyed a great day of chess, learning new skills and making new friends.

We await the overall results in the coming weeks.

Here are some reviews of the day:

The chess tournament was fantastic and fun! We had a blast! Students and teachers from all different schools around Tamworth came to the competition. Every team had four players and every player had eight rounds each. One team was black and one team was white. Unfortunately we were short of a player so every team we versed got a free point. There was a captain for every team. Our captain, Sara, was sick on the day so I stepped up and took the lead. All of the teams were very competitive and we had a great time versing them. We gradually made our way up the ladder beating one team after the other.  Our team got a bye in round 2 so we got a free point each. Each team had a team name and our team name was St Nicholas C. We saw some of our friends from different schools there too.

The chess tournament was interesting and a lot of fun! People from different schools were there. Each team had 4 members. We were in the St Nichs C team. You need to do a lot of work to get good at chess. When people versed our 1st player they got a free point. That made us go down to 5th for a while, but a bit later we were starting to make it up in the leaderboard. My favourite round was round five. Round five was a good match because at the start my opponent killed my queen, but I kept going and won!

The chess tournament was an awesome opportunity to have fun and to see the other schools' talent because Chess is not an easy type of game as it requires a lot of strategy. Tamworth Public were very welcoming towards us and most schools had excellent sportsmanship. We crept up the leaderboard one score at a time. My favorite round was when my opponent and I only had our kings left and that is called a stalemate because a king can’t take out a king. I would recommend learning how to play chess, it is a life-changing move.
