We had an aged care performance (in Week 6) where students went to Fairway Bayside Aged Care and ran a music-themed trivia event for the residents, as well as performing some music for them, through the school's Community Connections initiative (see write-up from Ajay below!). Thank you so much to all of the students who went to the aged care home!
On Friday 31 May, we had another Lunchtime Concert, where our Year 9 & 10 Making the Musician class performed to students outside W4. We also had a special performance by some of the school's teachers, which was incredible to see!

Thank you to all of the performers, and for everyone that came and watched the Lunchtime Concert!

Fairway Bayside Aged Care Event
Last week, Year 10 students from Beaumaris Secondary College participated in the "Community Connections" initiative for the Beyond program. As part of this project, Finn Molloy and I organised and ran a music trivia event featuring songs from the 1960s to the 1990s for the residents at Fairway Bayside Aged Care. The trivia was supported by live musical performances from Teerapat Singhruedee and Tommy Van Raay. We were also lucky to have Will Bowles and Xico Sassman join us on the day to provide additional performance support, and we extend a huge thank you to them both for their help.
Despite experiencing minor technical difficulties during the event, the team adapted quickly to ensure the program continued smoothly. The residents were highly engaged, and we were proud to represent our school while making a positive impact in the local community.

On Air at Southern FM
Congratulations to Year 8 students Francesca E, Catalina K, Lincoln K and Nina K, who recently hosted a live radio show on 88.3 Southern FM. The experience provided an authentic opportunity to develop communication, collaboration and presentation skills while gaining firsthand experience in live broadcasting. We thank Southern FM for their ongoing support of our students and community.

Rock of Ages Rehearsal Update
This week our fabulous cast has been making great progress into Act 2 as well as revising previous songs and scenes from Act 1 and finding out what they do and maybe don’t remember! The cast have also been treated to a sneak peek of what the production T-shirts will look like, which is very exciting! As end of term approaches, it’s all hands on deck!
Theatre Studies Set Designs
This week, VCE Theatre Studies students completed part 1 of their SAC: designing and building a set model for the play they are currently studying: The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, by Bertolt Brecht, a 1941 American play detailing the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in a parody where the Nazis are gangsters in 1930s Chicago. Utilising key features of the Brechtian and Epic theatre conventions, students presented their realised designs to the class, showcasing their ideas and concepts. Common themes between the different designs were the use of Nazi and American propaganda, a “thrust” stage and minimalistic set pieces. Please enjoy the included pictures of some of the models.

Year 8 Innovate: Handsewn Plushie Project-Based Learning
Year 8 Innovate students have been developing their creativity and textile design skills through a hands-on project-based learning unit focused on creating a handsewn plushie for an identified end user.
Using the Design Process, students researched the needs and interests of their chosen user, brainstormed ideas and developed design solutions through annotated sketches and prototyping before creating their final product. Along the way, students built valuable practical skills in hand sewing, including appliqué, pattern making and blanket stitching, while also learning key design and manufacturing terminology.
The project has provided students with the opportunity to combine creativity, problem-solving and technical skills to produce a unique product tailored to the needs of another person.

Year 8 Create Visual: Exploring Surrealism
Year 8 Create Visual students have been exploring the imaginative world of Surrealism, drawing inspiration from the work of renowned Belgian artist René Magritte.
Using oil pastels and observational drawing techniques, students analysed and recreated elements of Magritte’s iconic artworks while investigating how surrealist artists challenge reality through unexpected imagery and visual symbolism. Throughout the unit, students developed their understanding of colour, composition and shading, while learning how artists use creative expression to provoke thought and spark curiosity.
The resulting artworks demonstrate both technical skill and a willingness to think beyond the ordinary, capturing the imaginative spirit of the Surrealist movement.

Year 9 & 10 Life Through the Lens
Our Life Through the Lens students have been busy preparing for the upcoming Arts Festival, It Takes a Community to Raise a Child, capturing a range of photographs that will be showcased as part of the festival exhibition.
Through their photography, students have explored composition, perspective and storytelling while developing their creative and technical skills.
