Big Science Competition Success
Earlier this year, students from Years 7–10 represented Glen Eira College in the Big Science Competition, an Australia-wide science competition run by Australian Science Innovations. The competition challenges students to apply their scientific knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to questions based on real-world scientific contexts.
We are pleased to acknowledge the achievements of the following students, who received awards for their performance in the competition:
High Distinction (Top 5% of participants)
- Skanda Madapura Guruprasad (Year 7)
- Tengyi Bian (Year 8)
- Bhavin Bandlamudi (Year 9)
Distinction (Next 10% of participants)
- Mia Porteous (Year 7)
- Gaston Lebeau (Year 9)
Credit (Next 25% of participants)
- Asher DCosta (Year 7)
- Emma Woodger (Year 7)
Congratulations to these students for their excellent results. We also acknowledge and thank all students who participated in the competition. Taking part in academic competitions requires students to challenge themselves beyond the regular classroom program, and we are proud of the enthusiasm and commitment shown by all participants.
Well done to everyone involved.

Year 7 Science
Students in year 7 are applying their learned knowledge of mixtures and separation techniques to separate a mixture of wood, sand, iron filings, salt and pebbles.
Students plan and follow their own method in this experiment. Will the mixtures be completely separated? Or will there be substances not separated?
7E learned about the importance of clean water access and how different countries have access to different resources. Students were assigned to countries with varying resources and budgeted, designed then made a water filter.
Well done 7E on using Japanese to "purchase" your materials!
Year 8 Science
8E have been learning about signs of chemical reactions and properties of substances.
In this prac, the students identified 4 mystery powders based on chemical reactions.
