As we get close to the end of the term, it continues to be very busy in the College.  Our older students are in the middle of exams, and our younger students are continuing to work hard across all subjects. The weather is colder and the mornings are darker, this extra darkness actually plays a huge part in why some students are feeling so exhausted right now:

  • Less Sunlight, More Melatonin: When it is dark and cold outside, our bodies naturally produce more melatonin (the hormone that makes us sleepy). It makes it much harder for kids to wake up for school in the dark and makes them feel sluggish earlier in the afternoon.

  • Disrupted Body Clocks: Waking up before the sun is fully up can throw off our natural body clocks, making us feel a bit like we have jet lag.

Combine those dark, cold mornings with the natural fatigue of a 10-week school term, and it makes total sense why some kids are hitting a wall. A bit of extra rest and understanding over the next couple of weeks will go a long way!

Here are a few suggestions on how you can help your child/children over the next two weeks:

  • Slow Down: Try to have fewer playdates, after-school activities, or shopping trips. Give them more time to just relax at home.

  • Be Patient with Big Feelings: When children are overtired, they cry or get angry more easily. If they have a meltdown over something small, it usually just means they need a hug and some quiet time.

  • Earlier Bedtimes: Putting your child to bed just 15 or 20 minutes earlier can make a big difference in how they feel the next day.

  • Keep it Low Pressure: Instead of asking lots of questions about school on the way home, try asking something simple like, "What made you smile today?"

We are so proud of all our students at St Mary’s. Let’s work together to give them the extra patience and love they need to finish the term well.

If you are worried about your child, please reach out to their classroom teacher or our wellbeing team. We are always here to help.
