RESIDENTIAL

Bernard.Murnane@education.wa.edu.au

What a windy and wet weekend it was. The amount of leaves, twigs, and recycling rubbish from overturned bins scattered across the carpark, workshops, and roadways after the weather event was incredible.

However, thanks to Grace and her crew, Paddy Carbone, Jamie and Petrina Bean, and a few others who jumped in to clean it all up before anyone arrived on Tuesday. Thank you.

Speakers

We have recently observed instances of very loud music being played through multiple large speakers in enclosed areas. While music is an enjoyable part of student life, the current volume levels are becoming a concern.

These areas are not only student spaces but also staff workplaces. Excessive noise in enclosed environments presents a Work Health and Safety (WHS) issue, as it can impact hearing, communication, concentration, and overall well-being.

Importantly, we already have a staff member who is significantly affected by very loud bass frequencies, experiencing illness that can last for several days after exposure. This highlights that the impact is real, significant and ongoing.

Expectations Moving Forward

  • Keep music at a reasonable volume, particularly indoors.

  • Avoid using multiple speakers in enclosed spaces.

  • Be mindful that these are shared areas used by both staff and students.

We want to be clear that we are not looking to ban the use of speakers, as we recognise the positive role music plays in residential life. However, if noise levels continue to pose safety concerns, restrictions that include limiting or removing speaker use may need to be introduced, along the lines of those at fellow Ag colleges. We thank you in advance.
