Amelia Frantz & Sean Procko

Dear parents and carers,

Thank you for attending the recent SSGs and celebrating your child's successes.  We really appreciate the collaborative efforts with the classroom team and school and the valuable inputs provided. Please reach out to the classroom teacher or myself if you were unable to attend this round as there may be alternate arrangements that can be made.

Students have continued to put in lots of hard work and effort in their learning over the past few weeks. Highlights have included learning about conflict resolution in person and social skills, conducting surveys in mathematics and practicing communication and social skills such as greeting and checking in with each other, especially during morning circle. Students have also been introduced to a classroom meeting with a focus on further learning about spot light behaviours from the expected behaviour matrix. This has been an excellent opportunity for all students to develop their leadership skills.

Some of our senior students recently had the opportunity to go to the Salvation Army. This provided the opportunity to practice work related skills. We are proud of all of the students efforts this term!

On the 16th of June students are offered the opportunity to participate in Neurodiversity Colour Run. Just a reminder that their clothing my become colourful from the powder. We encourage students to wear a white or light coloured t shirt on the day.

Have a great weekend, please reach out anytime,

Kind Regards,

Amelia Frantz

Secondary Sub School Leader

Room 27

This semester, Room 27 students had an amazing opportunity to attend Helping Hands Mission in Airport West and assist with the Food Pantry program, which provides essential food relief to individuals and families experiencing hardship. During their visit, students gained valuable insight into the important work that charities do within the community, and the positive impact volunteers can have on the lives of others.

Students enthusiastically participated in a range of practical tasks, including packaging oat bars that would be distributed to people in need, as well as sorting and preparing eggs and biscuits for sale in the mission's op shop. They also helped organise donated items, carefully sorting them and placing them in the appropriate sections of the store. These activities encouraged teamwork, responsibility, and an understanding of how community organisations operate. Students particularly enjoyed exploring the op shop and purchasing a few items themselves, knowing that their purchases would directly support the charity's ongoing programs and services.

Students also attended Melbourne Museum to participate in the Road to Zero exhibition and the Safe Journeys Program. This engaging excursion provided students with an opportunity to learn about road safety through a variety of interactive displays and hands-on activities. Students explored topics such as safe decision-making, the importance of following road rules, and how different choices can affect the safety of all road users.

A highlight of the day was the opportunity to work collaboratively in small groups to create their own road safety television advertisements. Students selected video footage, chose music and sound effects, and developed their own creative slogans to communicate important road safety messages. This activity encouraged creativity, communication, critical thinking, and teamwork while reinforcing key concepts about staying safe on and around roads.

In the final week of the term, students will be attending ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image), where they will explore the fascinating history of film, television, and digital media. Prior to the excursion, students will be learning about the evolution of filmmaking with their teacher, Angela, who is a specialist Media Teacher and also works on independent film projects in her spare time. Her industry knowledge and passion for media will help students gain a deeper understanding of how films and television programs are created.

As part of this learning experience, students will also participate in public transport training. They will walk to Jacana Station, travel by train into the city, and then catch a tram to ACMI. This is an important component of the program as it provides students with authentic opportunities to develop independence, confidence, and real-world travel skills. Students will practise reading timetables, navigating the public transport system, following safety procedures, and working together while travelling in the community.

Throughout the semester, Room 27 students have demonstrated enthusiasm, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Whether supporting a local charity, learning about road safety, or preparing to explore the world of film and media, students have continued to develop valuable life skills while building confidence and independence. As Term 2 comes to an end, Room 27 is looking forward to a well-deserved holiday break and the exciting learning opportunities that await in semester 2.
