Last week, two classes of year six took an excursion to the road safety exhibit in the Melbourne Museum. 6EL and 6MP were excited to see and learn about how to stay safe on our busy roads. I was so excited to see and learn new things!

Shortly after I arrived at school, my class took attendance and we headed to the bus. Unfortunately, my friends couldn't get the back spots, but we occupied ourselves by chatting and observing our surroundings on the way there. Walking off the rowdy bus, I realised that the museum was far larger than I had once remembered.

After we ate our snack and headed into the building we had some time to spare. We looked around the History of Melbourne and the Nature Observatory, before being led to the Road to Zero exhibit.

6EL first learnt about the four sections of road safety instructed by two people. After I got into a group with a couple of classmates, we were handed a clipboard and a lanyard. We follow the instructors over to a room full of immersive and interactive activities. Next, we snacked on our lunches, then went into the second room. We still had the same two guides, but this time, we were promoting ideas of how to stay safe on the roads. In different groups, we created an ad to put down your phone while crossing the street, with a cool editing app and the slogan, ‘Look at the road, not your phone!’

On the way back, my friends snagged the back seats and plague played funny games together. Although this outing was meant for road safety, my favourite part was freely venturing through the Melbourne History with my friends. I enjoyed this excursion so much, especially as our last year six excursion here at Good Shepherd.

Last Friday my peers and I headed off to an exciting Melbourne Museum in the city. We were on an excursion learning about safe traveling on public transport. We already learnt a bit about it throughout the past week. I had figured out how to take public transport from my home to my high school next year. I was waiting for this day because I hadn't gone on an excursion in so long.

When I got to school the classroom was buzzing with excitement to go on the excursion and we were picking bus partners and getting ready. When I stepped out of the bus I actually looked all around me admiring the view. The city looked amazing.

Because we had time we went to the Melbourne history area that I really enjoyed, I saw all kinds of cool things about Melbourne. I learnt about what Melbourne looked like a long time ago. I even saw a life size replica of Phar Lap the racing horse. Afterwards we went to the forest area where I saw cool lizards and colourful birds. The water running and the fresh air with tall trees made the experience unforgettable. Personally I really enjoyed the forest area because I love wildlife and I love to see animals.

Finally we went to the Road to Zero, Safe Journeys area and in the first activity I made my very own ad with my group! Our slogan was “If looking at your phone while walking won't work, then it also won't work while driving”. We were all really proud of our ad and after I finished I walked around and saw the other people’s ads and it was all really good (though my group was the best).

For the second and last activity we got to put on VR headsets and it was like I was in a time machine that changed the car depending on the year. Some of the stuff I learned was that back then when cars were first invented they had no seatbelts and that over time it evolved and it ended in the year 2050 with no steering wheel and it was very futuristic. I felt like I really was travelling through time, and I was even able to do it twice and that was so worth it because I missed so many details. I did get a tiny bit dizzy at one moment but most of it was really good.

I said goodbye and I went on our bus again. It was a fun way back with lots of stories to tell. Finally I arrived at school just on time and I went to get picked up. I really enjoyed the sun shining and the huge amounts of information about safe travelling and Melbourne history. To me this excursion was really fun and enjoyable and I hope that the other students also felt the same.
