Year 5 Mathematics Incursion

Yesterday in Year 5, the whole year level and I had a Maths incursion that we really enjoyed. Not only did we have fun, but we also learnt a lot of Maths while trying to escape a room full of Maths questions. We also got to choose our group name.

We enjoyed one of the sections called Newton's Number, where we had clues to guess a number that would let us get to the next level. We're not going to tell you the answer because we would like you to guess it for fun. It was really hard, but the main part was that it was fun and we worked as a team.

In our second session, we had a Maths show and it was really fun learning about some tricks and women who were very successful in Mathematics. You'll need a calculator for this. One of the tricks was to choose a number from 1–9. Then write it three times on your calculator. Add the three numbers together in your head and then divide the number on your calculator by that total. Let me guess, you got 37!

Overall, this incursion was extremely fun, and we didn't even realise how much Maths we were learning!

The excursion was a good maths activity where we had to solve riddles and questions to go on to the next level. We found it challenging to solve the questions. Our team did not get first place, but it was still a hard contest for us. We still gave it our best, and it was hard and fun at the same time.  - Matthew 5SZ

On Thursday, the 15th of October, the Year 5’s experienced an exciting math incursion, where we navigated our way through different puzzles that challenged our brain. We went to the hall and met our host, Sophie! There were two parts, an escape room and a maths show. Firstly, we tested our thinking skills with an extraordinary escape room, where we went through a series of puzzles. During each puzzle we never gave up and kept going to find the right answer, while also learning many new things! Next, Sophie explained an interesting presentation about famous and inspiring mathematicians. We learned so many things and played fun games, including a mind reading game, using maths and a game of heads or tails. The thing that we enjoyed was learning about interesting math history. We learnt that you should never give up and always be resilient during every challenge we face! Overall, this math incursion will be something we never forget! Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

On the 15th of October, the Year Fives had the opportunity to participate in a two-part maths incursion. This gave us a greater knowledge of maths and learning it in a fun, interactive way.

The first part was an escape room, putting us in groups of four. We had to work together to solve mathematicians' riddles in order to escape. This helped with our teamwork skills and putting all of our knowledge together to crack the code! It was a really fun incursion to experience. Even though some groups didn’t finish it, it was not a failure, just an unfinished equation.

The second part was a captivating maths show, with us learning the history behind maths, with mind-reading gods and the creation of the numbers we use every day in our lives. Student volunteers got to contribute. This gave us the chance to know how the essential subject in life was formed. This was an engaging and well-presented show.

Overall, this incursion taught us a lot about maths and making it one of the best, with new intellect on this wonderful subject. The incursion helped with teamwork and thinking skills, giving us academic growth. Thank you, teachers, for organising this mathematical endeavour.
