Staff Professional Learning - Mary Mackillop Heritage Centre

On Monday 5 October, the Good Shepherd staff gathered at the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre in East Melbourne for a day of faith formation, reflection and learning inspired by the life and legacy of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop. The day was led by Sister Rita Malavisi.
The day provided an opportunity for staff to deepen their understanding of the theological and cardinal virtues through the example of Mary’s life. Through prayer, gallery exploration, group discussions and personal reflection, staff considered how Mary demonstrated faith, hope, love, courage, justice and wisdom in her service to others.
A highlight of the day was exploring the stories and artefacts connected to Mary’s life, including the idea of a “Providence Bag” reflecting on what we carry with us on our own journey of faith and the qualities that help guide us along the way. Staff reflected on Mary’s resilience, compassion, trust in God and commitment to education, considering how these characteristics can continue to shape our relationships and work within the Good Shepherd community.
The day concluded with a reflective walk to significant sites connected to Mary MacKillop, including her birthplace. This provided a final opportunity to pause, reflect and consider how we can continue to live out our Catholic faith through our daily actions and service to others.
Inspired by Mary MacKillop’s example, we returned to Good Shepherd reminded of our shared mission to nurture faith, foster belonging and support every student. We look forward to bringing these learnings into our classrooms, encouraging students to explore the virtues and put their faith into action through kindness, compassion and service to others.
