Living Like Christ Every Day

As Year 7 students begin exploring this term’s Assembly theme, The Life of Christ, 7M launched the year-level focus with a meaningful assembly centred on the message: “Live Like Christ Every Day.”

Through spoken word, drama, Scripture and prayer, students shared messages about kindness, courage, forgiveness and including others. The assembly encouraged students to reflect on how they choose to live each day in their classrooms, friendships and everyday interactions.

Students explored the way Jesus noticed those who were often overlooked, stood up for what was right and showed love and compassion to others. A clip from The Chosen, showing Jesus healing the leper, reminded students of the compassion and love Jesus showed to those rejected by society. A meaningful skit also highlighted the pressure young people can face to follow the crowd and reminded students that true courage is choosing what is right, even when it is difficult.

Year 7 students were challenged with the question: “How will we live?” In response, students boldly declared: “We will live like Christ every day!” During the finale, students formed two crosses on either side of the word “Christlike”, creating a powerful visual reminder that being Christlike is not simply something we say, but something we strive to live out daily through our actions and choices.

The assembly concluded with the question:

“Who are you choosing to become?”

It was a special beginning to the Year 7 journey through The Life of Christ and a reminder that every student is seen, valued, loved and capable of making a difference in the lives of others.

Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition

On Saturday the 16th of May, four students took part in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition. This is a statewide competition in which students must prepare and present a six minute speech followed by an unprepared three minute speech, as they compete against students from a range of different schools.

Speech topics included areas such as "Digital Detox," "Special Moments," and "Putting off Procrastination." All of the students involved did an exceptional job representing the school with speeches that inspired their audience, advocated for change and shared messages of hope for the future.

A commendable effort by all.

Piaget in Action - 11 Psychology visits Foundation class

Take some time to look at the image below - which row has more coins, or are they the same?

Jean Piaget theorised that an important milestone in cognitive development was the ability to understand conservation. Conservation refers to recognising that quantity remains the same even when the appearance of an object or group changes. In this task, although one row of coins appears longer after being spread apart, the number of coins has not changed.

Piaget believed that younger children in the preoperational stage are often influenced by appearance and may think the longer row has “more” coins. As children develop into the concrete operational stage, they begin to understand conservation and recognise that both rows still contain the same amount.

In a collaborative session, Year 11 Psychology students partnered with Foundation students to run through the above activity, alongside several similar tasks. The Year 11's were intrigued to discover a wide variety of responses.

Some Foundation students were able to explain that the rows still had the same number of coins despite the spacing changing, demonstrating an understanding of conservation. Others focused on the appearance of the rows and believed the longer row must contain more coins.

These activities highlighted how children’s thinking develops over time, and provided the Year 11 students with a practical insight into Piaget’s theory of cognitive development.

Thank you to Mrs Were and the Foundations for having us for the afternoon!
