Connect: Year 5

With camp fast approaching we are in the final stages of preparation. A packing list was attached to the last newsletter, and a paper copy was sent home with students. Forms for dietary requirements have now closed. If your child is not attending camp, please let us know ASAP as this impacts activity groups and cabin allocation.

Please note that the camp does not allow aerosol deodorants, hairspray etc as they have the potential to set off fire alarms.

Literacy

As we look forward to the next two weeks our literacy focus remains much the same....

Through the text, students will develop their understanding of direct speech, with a focus on using appropriate punctuation correctly. They will also be encouraged to expand their vocabulary by exploring language used within the novel and applying it to their own writing tasks. In addition, students will receive explicit instruction on how to use adverbial phrases to add detail and improve the fluency of their writing.

Sentence types will be explicitly taught, and students will be encouraged to incorporate these into their writing. Nonfiction texts will allow the students to gain a greater understanding of indigenous culture, the impact of English colonisation and the heroes who fought to save their country and beliefs.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will focus on fractions, with explicit teaching around adding and subtracting fractions with the same and related denominators. This learning will build on their prior knowledge of converting fractions with related denominators. Our non-number focus for the term will be Probability, where students will conduct chance experiments, record and analyse their findings, and describe outcomes using fractions.

Science

This term we will be embarking on a journey through the galaxy. Studying planets, stars and galaxies.

Attendance
