Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

We have had a wonderful fortnight in Prep with our Puppet Incursion and Book Week Parade in Week 7. We are also looking forward to welcoming some special visitors into our classroom tomorrow to celebrate Father’s Day.

Puppet Incursion

Last Wednesday, John from Don’t Move Puppet Theatre ran a puppet making workshop with our Preps. The Preps designed their own puppets using a range of craft materials. It was fabulous to see such a variety of puppets including giraffes, butterflies and tigers! Thank you to the many parent helpers who came along and assisted on the day. These programs would not be possible without your support.

Jar Collection

The Prep Team is collecting jars in preparation for our Seaside Fair on Sunday 26th November. We are looking for jars around the size of a jam jar or approximately 350g. Can we please ask that these jars have their lid with them and are clean, with labels removed. These jars can be provided to your child’s classroom teacher. Thank you very much in advance for your support!

Father’s Day Afternoon Tea

We are looking forward to the Prep dads joining us in our classrooms at 2:45pm tomorrow, Friday the 1st September. We hope you can make it, but we also understand that this might not be possible due to other commitments. If dad is not available at this time, another special person in your child’s life is more than welcome to attend (e.g. grandfather, uncle, family friend, etc.). We have sent a compass notification to families that contains more information about the event.

Prep Breakfast

On Wednesday the 13th of September, students will be taking part in the Prep Breakfast. This is an introduction to a camp-like experience and is planned to develop your child’s independence in a familiar and safe environment away from home. Students will arrive at school in their pyjamas at the usual time, eat breakfast at school and change into their school clothes to continue their activities for the day. You may like to start having your child dress themselves independently in the morning, to begin preparing them for this event. Students will need to bring a plate, bowl, spoon, knife and tea towel. It is preferable that the dishware is plastic. We have provided a checklist to families outlining the items that students need to bring.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7 - 8

Reading - Students will explore the features of narrative texts including the characters, setting, problem and solution in stories. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students are now beginning to learn other common sounds including digraphs and trigraphs. Our current focus is the /sh/ and /ch/ sounds.

Writing - Students are continuing to learn to correctly form letters and use their sound knowledge to write sentences. We are reading and discussing narrative texts and writing written responses about these. Students are also beginning to have a go at creating their own narratives.

Numeracy - Students are learning about measurement including length, capacity and mass. This week we have been exploring length by measuring, comparing and ordering the length of objects in our classrooms.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is What’s my story? What’s your story? Our big topics will include: stories can be communicated in different ways, stories from the past can show us how things have changed over time and different cultures share stories in different ways.
