Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Katie & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Reading and Writing in Week 7, students explored poetry and poetic devices, such as similes, rhythm, personification and symbolism. Week 8 saw the students writing Haikus, I Am poems and using alliteration. The students immensely enjoyed creating alliteration about themselves, finding a range of words to describe themselves in funny situations. Check out some of these!

  • Energetic Emma eagerly eats eggs every evening
  • Awesome Alessandra acts angrily against apes
  • Zany Zoe zooms on zebras
  • Secret Sam Samuel and Sammy robbed the store in September in Samoa on Sunday
  • Terrific Tex trotted in the trolls territory

Students also continued reading the class text, Storm Boy and studying the characters and setting.

Numeracy: The Grade Fours extended their knowledge about Area where they learned to determine the cm2 area of their hand (which they traced in their Numeracy books). They also played games, colouring an area on their grid paper from rolled dice. The one with the most area covered won! Students also began looking at Chance and Probability. We discussed the likelihood of scenarios. For example, what is the likelihood of GWS winning the Premiership or the likelihood of rain on Monday.

Inquiry: The students continued their journey learning about the sun, moon and earth. Students delved into the seasons, why they happen and why the southern hemisphere seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere. This was explored further with the students creating a model connecting the earth, moon and sun. They also investigated the phases of the moon and created Moon Phases spinner.

Book Week: All the Grade Fours enjoyed the Book Week Parade - especially the dressing up part! There were some really clever and creative costumes and the collaborative costumes were well thought out. Well done, Grade Fours!!!
