Year 3/4

Engaging in Writing

Year 3/4 students have been learning about and writing explanation texts.  They have been taking part in a variety of language experiences to help them build their vocabulary and knowledge to support the writing process. Some experiences that they have enjoyed include investigating a duck’s life cycle, by observing the three ducklings from Foundation, cooking chocolate crackles and learning about why popcorn pops.

All of these experiences led students to create some wonderful explanation texts.

Becoming Zoo Keepers

Students have stepped into the role of a zoo keeper and have been learning about how animals in zoos need enrichments to keep them physically and mentally happy and healthy.

Students and teachers enjoyed a big day at the zoo, observing the animals' behaviours, looking at enrichment items they had in their enclosures and even listening to a special talk from the zoo keepers. They got to see first hand some of the enrichment items and how the animals interact with them. It was a great day out where we all learnt a lot.

Students will be presented this week with a design brief from the zoo and they will start to build and test their own prototype enrichment item for an animal they choose!

Keep your eye out to see what they come up with!

An email to the Zoo from Bao Tram

Dear Zoo Keepers,

The day at the Zoo was AMAZING! Thank you so,so much for the fantastic day. I saw so many enrichment activities for the animals and could see how they helped make the lives of the animals better. My Favourite animals were the penguin chicks, lemurs and seals. The lemurs were super active and jumping around while the penguin chicks were calm and relaxed. The seals were scary but in a funny way, which I personally enjoyed. Thank you so much once again! I would love to visit another time!

Kind regards Bao Tram from Athol Road Primary School

Linking Maths with the Real World

Students have been collecting data and creating graphs. They have collected data by walking out to Springvale Rd and counting cars, looking at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and from Minecraft. From this data they have then created line graphs, bar graphs and picture graphs to analyse.
