CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Mathematics this week, we are continuing our learning the measurement of mass and capacity.

VOCABULARY

Mass: Mass is the amount that an object weighs. It is measured in grams, kilograms, or tons.

Capacity: Capacity is the maximum amount that fits inside an object. It is measured in millilitres and litres.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Using a set of kitchen scales, have your child find some different objects around the house and weigh them. Get them to record the weight of each object in grams or kilograms and record them on a piece of paper. They can then compare the weights and then put the objects in order from lightest to heaviest.

Using a measuring jug and some different size/shape containers from the kitchen, have your child measure how much water fits in each container. Get them to pour water into the containers, and record how many millilitres or litres each container fit inside it. If a container fits more than the capacity of the measuring jug, then they will need to pour more than one amount in and then use addition to add the two amounts together to find the total capacity.
