Professional Learning Community 1 (Grade 1)

What a busy couple of weeks it has been in PLC 1!

We have been learning all about Robots.

Some of the activities we have participated in include….

  • Earth Ed Robots incursion – Earth Ed came and taught us how to code a robot to do the chicken dance! This involved lots of laughter, fun and smiles.
  • The robot that went CRAZY! Students spent a week writing about a Robot that was let loose and caused chaos. We saw stories about robots breaking things, dancing, flashing lights like a disco ball, ruining gardens and turning into transformers.
  • Which robot is best? – This week students are writing a persuasive piece about which robot is the best robot. Students are writing about all different kinds of robots including robots who cook, clean, dress you, mow the lawn and many more.
  • Advertisement – we are looking forward to creating an Advertisement next week, to persuade an audience which robot they should buy and why.

Reminders….

  • All students need to bring their portfolio back to school ASAP – we are missing many and can not add this terms amazing work into them if we don’t have them.
  • Recycling – we are still collecting cereal boxes and jars, ready for next term.
  • Footy colours day – next Friday is footy colours day, come dressed in your favourite footy clothes and running shoes on, ready to practise some footy skills.

We wish all students and families a safe and happy holidays, and we look forward to finishing the year off on a high!

Professional Learning Community 2 (Grade 2)

Dear PLC 2 Families,

As we near the end of another exciting term, it's time to reflect on our journey and look ahead to what's coming next. Here's a glimpse of what we've been up to in PLC 2:

In our Reading sessions, we've been diving into the fascinating world of inference and text analysis. Our young minds have been working hard to uncover the hidden meanings in stories, making reading an even more thrilling adventure by inferring characters emotions.

In Writing the PLC2 authors embarked on an incredible tea bag experiment, which ignited their creativity. They've been busy crafting descriptive pieces that capture the fiery tea bag experience.

The topic chance and data has been our focus in Numeracy, setting the stage for our upcoming fractions unit. The connections we've made along the way have deepened our understanding of mathematical concepts.

A reminder about Footy Colours Day, which is just around the corner. On the last day of term, we encourage everyone to wear their favourite sports team colours and jerseys to celebrate our love for sport and teamwork.

We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved and restful holiday break. We can't wait to dive into an action-packed Term 4, filled with new adventures, challenges, and opportunities for growth.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.

Warm regards,

The PLC 2 Team

Professional Learning Community 3 (Grade 3)

PLC3 students had an absolute blast on camp at Log Cabin Camp in Creswick. They challenged themselves to try each of the activities on offer. These included the Giant Swing, the Zip Line and the Possum Glide. Each of these required a safety harness to be attached to the equipment and a helmet for head protection. We also went on a night walk with our torches flashing from side to side and many students enjoyed jumping on the trampoline, playing big chess and trying for goals during free time.

In Reading this week students are participating in Book Clubs where they have a choice of a book to read and then ask questions within their group to encourage a rich discussion about the text. In Writing, students are creating an advertisement about a camp or holiday destination. They are including some persuasive language, slogans and reasons why their place would be exciting so people would enjoy themselves.

In Numeracy, students are investigating mass by using different types of scales and units of measure. There are some challenging, open-ended tasks where students may be in their ‘zone of confusion’ at some stage in the lesson but assistance is given to encourage problem solving skills.

Only one week to go before holidays!

Have a great week,

PLC3 Teachers

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

As we are finishing off Term 3 we can reflect back on a busy term of learning!

  • All about Dragons! Reading and Writing texts all about dragons
  • Doing lots of rich, challenging Numeracy tasks – with a focus on place value
  • Being a part of the Bullying Day, where we did lessons to reflect on our Respect for each other and being Kind at school
  • Dressing up for Book Week and completing activities to support of Dragon learning
  • Completing our PBL Unit all about Materials and then designing an outfit for a scenario that the students were given and presenting this to the class.

Wow! Am sure I am still missing some but that is impressive.

Next term, the first week back will be swimming please ensure you have completed the permission note on Compass and students have all their swimming stuff with them for Monday 2nd October to Friday 6th October.

Also, can you please dust off your school hats ready for the start of next term – Remember we are a Sunsmart School!!

We hope you all have a safe and restful holiday, ready for a long and busy Term 4.

Regards,

PLC 4 Teachers

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

Dear parents/carers,

Over the past few weeks the Year 5 cohort have immersed themselves into a range of academic activities. For example, in Numeracy they have been learning how to use their current knowledge of multiplication to assist them in understanding division.

In Reading, we have continued with Wonder discussing connections to real life experiences. We have also been incorporating drama into our reading lessons by experimenting reading aloud with a different expressions each day.

In Writing this week, we started a persuasive piece on Science vs History where we incorporate the topics of happy, healthy and wise. Our lessons began with a line debate to get the students ideas flowing.

Monday students learnt about all things puberty, including the changes they will experience. They all did a fantastic job on the day and approached the topic with a sense of maturity. This could be a beneficial moment to continue these discussions at home.

As we are approaching the end of Term 3, we encourage students to maintain this newfound maturity as they begin to consider future leadership roles.

Just a reminder that next Friday is Footy Colours Day.

We hope you have a great break and get ready for a busy Term 4 with Writer’s Festival preparation commencing Week 1.

From the Year 5 team

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Carers,

We are thrilled to share with you the latest learnings from our PLC6 cohort. Here's a glimpse into what they've been learning across different subjects.

Reading: Making Connections and Synthesizing

In our reading, students have been immersed in the art of making connections and synthesizing information from texts. Through thought-provoking discussions and engaging literature, they have honed their critical thinking and comprehension skills.

Our young readers have been exploring the text of Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar, learning to connect various elements within texts to form a deeper understanding. They have demonstrated their ability to synthesize information from different sources, thus fostering a more profound appreciation for this crucial subject matter.

Writing: Describing an Infection and Narrating an Outbreak

In writing, our students have been hard at work, mastering the art of descriptive and narrative writing. They've had the opportunity to delve into the world of infections and outbreaks, creating vivid descriptions and compelling narratives.

For their descriptive writing exercises, students have crafted detailed accounts of various infections, focusing on the causes, symptoms, and impacts on the human body.

Our budding authors have undertaken the challenging task of narrating an outbreak. Through these narratives, they've explored the human stories behind historical pandemics and contemporary health crises. It's been inspiring to witness their creativity and empathy as they've crafted narratives that put them in the shoes of individuals living through these challenging times.

Mathematics: Order of Operations and Cartesian Plane

Turning to mathematics, our students have been sharpening their problem-solving skills by delving into the latest topics of the Order of Operations and the Cartesian Plane.

With the Order of Operations, students have been tackling complex equations and mastering the correct sequence for solving mathematical problems. This foundational skill is crucial for their future success in mathematics and related disciplines.

The Cartesian Plane has been another exciting area of exploration. Our young mathematicians have been plotting points, graphing functions, and exploring geometric shapes on this two-dimensional coordinate system. It has been a wonderful opportunity for them to visualize mathematical concepts and appreciate the beauty of mathematics in the real world.

If you have any questions or would like more information about your child's progress in these subjects, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher. We greatly value your partnership in your child's education and eagerly anticipate the exciting learning adventures that lie ahead.

Thanks,

PLC6
