SSV National Cross Country Championships

Last weekend Christian travelled to Canberra to compete in the Athletics Australia National Cross Country Championships from the 25th-28th August. Christian qualified to represent Team VIC at Nationals for the U10-U12 age group, by placing in the top 6 U11 Boys at the SSV State Cross Country Championships in Yarra Glen back in July.

Christian has emailed through a summary of his experience in Canberra…

I excitedly arrived with my family in Canberra, the day before the National Championships began.

On Day 1 of the National Championships, Team VIC met at Stromlo Forest Park. We walked around the course as a group with our coaches to become familiar with it. After we had walked the course, we were given a small bag of Victorian badges that we could trade with all the other states. I was lucky enough to collect a badge from all the states & NZ. Then we were a part of the opening ceremony, in which each state team marched behind their state captains who were holding their state flag. This was a special ceremony to be part of and I felt very proud to represent Victoria.

Day 2 of the championships was the individual race day. It was unusually hot and sunny for Canberra in August. We warmed up as a group and then it was time for the U11 boys to marshal to the call room for our race. There was 42 boys in my age group ready to race. There were a lot nerves by everyone on the start line. Before I knew it, we were off. I ran a strong race and was particularly happy with my start. Overall, I placed 14th. I placed 4th out of the 6 Team VIC boys, which was great as I had seeded 6th in VIC coming into this race.

There is always a team element as part of individual Cross Country races and the U11 Team VIC boys placed 2nd in the nation as a Team and we were each awarded silver national medals.

We were all really proud of each other and cheered loudly for our achievement.

Day 3 was our Team excursion day. We all met as a group in the afternoon and were taken on tour of the National Museum of Australia with our coaches. It was really fun to spend time with the other boys and get to know them all better.

Day 4 was the relay race day. I was really happy going into this event, as I knew it would be extra fun racing as a relay team. I was the 3rd runner in my team. The race was extremely close between NSW, QLD and VIC throughout each leg of the race. In the end NSW placed 1st, QLD placed 2nd & VIC placed a close 3rd. We were awarded a bronze national medal. We were so happy to get a second medal at the championships and had a really successful weekend overall.

Once all the racing had finished, we were a part of the closing ceremony where state shields were awarded. Team VIC hadn’t won any shields for the last eight years, but this year we won the shield for the Most Improved State Relay Team. We proudly accepted it and all cheered so much.

The team spirit and sportsmanship I felt throughout this experience were definitely the highlights for me. I really enjoyed sharing in the success of Team VIC with all my team mates.

I’ve made great friends with other kids like me, who have a passion for middle distance running. This has motivated me to train hard and hopefully qualify again for the Cross Country Victorian Team next year. It has been the most amazing experience of my life so far and I feel very lucky to have been a part of it.

SRC Zooper Dooper day

The SRC will run a Zooper Dooper day tomorrow with Zooper Doopers being sold from the canteen at lunchtime for $1 each.   We have a range of Zooper Doopers available including flavoured, lemonade and sugar free. Children can buy only one Zooper Dooper and we ask that they bring the correct money if possible.

Mordialloc District Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to our PPS team of 62 students who took part in the District Athletics Carnival last week, and came away from the day as 'District Champions' -  a true team result.  We couldn't have been more proud of their behaviour on the day and their commitment to taking part.

Ribbons were awarded to the first three placegetters in every event and those students who finished first or second will progress to the Kingston Division Championships.

If you are leaving PPS at the end of the year...

As in all school communities, some families relocate at the end of the year. Please advise the office as soon as possible if you will not be returning to PPS in 2024.  We also require families to complete and submit an Exit Form, this can be found on our website by clicking HERE.

As you will understand, projected enrolments influence our workforce planning and class configurations. Some families share their intentions with their children and others wait until the time is right. Please be assured that all information shared with us is confidential.
