On Monday, ten lucky students were fortunate to attend the first of four evenings of the Jumpstart program hosted by Multiplex. Delivered by young female professionals from a range of backgrounds – including engineering, construction management, architecture, workplace health and safety, and design – the program aims to provide young women with a unique and inspiring insight into the diverse career pathways available within the construction industry.

Monday’s Multiplex program taught me the fundamentals of construction and the pathways within the construction industry, while being in an environment with other women working in this field. Multiplex used lots of fun activities to help us discover the deeper aspects of how the construction industry functions and how different roles come together to create a building or infrastructure. Specifically, this program taught me more about the client and builder connection, and the different aspects – such as safety and cost – that all contribute to the overall quality of a job.

The Multiplex opportunity was a great way to see what work is required for each stage of planning a build, and what different aspects are involved in being a project manager. Being able to participate in a site visit to see what is required to lay concrete, for example, was eye‑opening, as it highlighted all the hidden steps involved. Overall, the first session was informative and enjoyable, and I am excited for the next sessions.

Monday was a great start; we got to see and experience all the basics. It was welcoming and felt good to be in a female‑based workspace. All the information was helpful, and the site walk really immersed the experience. I had lots of fun and am looking forward to the next one.
