I want to shine a light on two areas of learning that are sometimes underestimated, yet absolutely essential in shaping the thinkers and innovators of tomorrow: the Arts and Technologies.  Here at Mt A our curriculum offerings include Music, Food and Nutrition, Food Technology, Design, Drama, Visual Art, Digital Technologies, Digital Solutions and Media Arts in Practice.

In a world that is changing faster than ever, students need the ability to imagine new possibilities, to question assumptions, and to solve problems in original ways. This is exactly what Arts and Technologies subjects cultivate.

Through the Arts, students learn to express ideas, experiment with perspectives, and communicate in ways that words alone cannot capture. Creativity isn’t just about painting or performing - it’s about learning to think flexibly, to take risks, and to approach challenges with curiosity rather than fear.

Technologies subjects, on the other hand, empower students to understand and shape the world they live in. Whether they’re designing solutions, coding systems, or building prototypes, students learn to analyse problems, test ideas, and refine their thinking with precision and logic.

Together, these subjects form a powerful partnership. The Arts spark imagination: Technologies channel that imagination into real-world innovation. When students engage in both, they develop a mindset that is adaptable, inventive, and ready for the future.

This week, we celebrated our Arts and Technologies Breakfast of Champions. A wonderful group of alumnae and guest presenters shared their experiences, highlighting the benefits, enjoyment, and wide range of career pathways available beyond school. A special thank‑you to the staff who worked so hard to organise this inspiring event for our students.

So, let’s continue to champion the Arts and Technologies here at Mount Alvernia College - not as optional extras, but as essential pathways to creative and critical thinking. Because our students who can dream boldly and think deeply will be the ones who shape the world ahead.

Year 10 Visual Art

The Year 10 Visual Art students are currently working on their unit, Representations Through Modern Art. In this unit, students are to create an assemblage sculpture out of found materials that becomes the foundation of their body of work.

Students, first paint their assemblage in the style of Realism before completing two further paintings that depict the assemblage and its themes through the lens of their chosen Modern Art Movements.

Whether it be an iteration of the sculpture in geometric Cubist form, evolving to become a Surrealist landscape or a nod to Pop Art expression, by the end of term students will resolve a triptych of paintings that take the viewer on a journey through the student's chosen touch points of 20th Century Modern Art history.
