On 19 October 2001, he was elected as a Liberal Member to the Tasmanian House of Assembly for the seat of Franklin in a recount caused by the resignation of Peter Hodgman. He was defeated for re-election in 2002 when both the leader and deputy leader of the Liberal Party also lost their seats.

Martin worked at Corpus Christi, Bellerive, from 1988- 2008, at St John’s, Richmond, from 2009-13 and St Aloysius, Kingston, 2024 – 2025.

The following tribute was placed in the Hobart Mercury by the St Aloysius College Community:

'It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mr Martin McManus, a much-loved member of our St Aloysius Catholic College community and a dedicated Catholic educator for over 40 years.

'Martin was a vibrant presence, an extraordinary teacher, a trusted colleague and friend, and a quiet pillar of strength for students, staff and families. He was deeply respected, endlessly generous, and will be remembered with immense gratitude, love and admiration. His impact on our College and on the lives of so many students will endure for generations.'

Martin was the great-grandson of Edward Mulcahy, a long-serving Tasmanian Senator and MHA. His father Robert attended the College from 1949-57 and his uncle Tim from

1943-50 — the achievements of both have been recorded in earlier editions of OVAtions, Robert (edition 10, July 2018) and Tim (edition 60, October 2022). Tim passed away 21 Feb 2024.

Robert was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2017 for service to  the community through a range of social welfare organisations including St John Ambulance, St Vincent de Paul Society, the Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart, the Bible Society of Australia, the Seven Mile Beach Volunteer Fire Brigade and Lifeline.
