Acting with judgement is one of the core elements of Quality Thinking, identified through our research partnership with the University of Melbourne’s New Metrics Program. Quality Thinking describes the ways young people learn to make sense of complexity, uncertainty and change. Within this framework, acting with judgement focuses on students’ capacity to make thoughtful, informed decisions rather than relying on habit, impulse or assumption.
Research from the McKinsey Institute on future workforce trends shows that skills linked to critical thinking are among the fastest‑growing capabilities sought by employers. As work becomes more complex and less routine, organisations place greater value on people who can exercise judgement and make sound decisions in unfamiliar situations. Developing the ability to act with judgement during their time at All Saints’ College, means our young people are prepared for future work, learning and life.
Parents and guardians play a powerful role in strengthening students’ judgement by encouraging reflection rather than rushing to provide answers. Simple conversations after everyday decisions can make thinking visible.
You might ask:
“What would you do differently next time?”
Questions like these prompt students to reflect on their thinking, helping them build confidence in their decision‑making and recognise that good judgement develops through practice, reflection and experience.
