Understanding Discipline: Working Together to Support Our Students

As part of our ongoing commitment to the Friendly Schools Project, this article focuses on how positive relationships and consistent expectations help children feel safe, supported and ready to learn. One key element of this is understanding discipline not as punishment, but as guidance—helping young people develop self‑awareness, responsibility and respectful behaviour, both online and offline.

Creating a culture of kindness, responsibility and connectedness works best when schools and families work together. Below is an updated guide to how we approach behaviour expectations at the College, and how families can reinforce these messages at home.

What Happens at School?

Our College has clear, student‑centred behaviour policies that outline:

  • Positive expectations for how we treat ourselves, others and our environment
  • Support structures that help students learn from mistakes
  • Recognition and reinforcement for positive choices and growth
  • Clear and fair consequences for choices that impact safety or wellbeing

These policies are part of our whole-College approach to student wellbeing, and they help students build self‑discipline, empathy, resilience and social responsibility. By knowing what is expected, students feel secure, respected and empowered.

How Families Can Help at Home

Consistency between home and the College is one of the most powerful ways to support your child’s development. Here are some positive, practical steps families can take:

  • Set clear, consistent limits and rules. Children thrive when they understand expectations—this includes guidelines for technology and internet use.
  • Ask your child to repeat the rules in their own words to check understanding.
  • Follow through with consistent consequences and rewards.
  • Notice and acknowledge positive behaviours—small bits of praise can make a big difference.
  • Model the behaviour you want to see. Children learn more from what we do than what we say.
  • Supervise your child’s activities—online and offline—so you know where they are and who they’re interacting with.
  • Familiarise yourself with the College’s expectations and behaviour policies to show your child that home and College are working as a team.
  • Show warmth, love and attention. You remain the most important and influential person in your child's life.

A united approach helps children feel supported, understood and safe—key goals of the Friendly Schools framework.
