Reflecting on Term 1 and Preparing for Term 2

As we approach the end of Term 1, it’s a great opportunity for students and families to pause and reflect on what has been a busy and significant start to the school year.

For many students, Term 1 is a time of adjustment and transition. New students joining Norwood Secondary College have been learning new routines, meeting teachers and classmates, and becoming familiar with the school environment. For other students, moving into a new year level often brings different expectations, new subjects, and changes in friendships or responsibilities.

Adjusting to these changes can take time. It’s completely normal for students to feel a mix of excitement, tiredness, pride in their achievements, and sometimes a little overwhelmed as they settle into new routines.

Taking a moment to reflect on the term can help students recognise their progress and feel more confident moving into Term 2.

Reflecting on the Term

Encouraging students to reflect on their experiences can help build resilience and self-awareness. Families might like to ask simple questions such as:

  • What is something you are proud of from this term?

  • What was something new you learned or tried?

  • What was one challenge you worked through?

  • What is something you would like to improve or focus on next term?

Reflection helps students recognise that growth happens over time and that challenges are a normal part of learning.

Preparing for Term 2

As students look ahead to next term, small steps can help them feel organised and ready to start strong.

Some helpful strategies include:

  • Reset routines: Re-establishing consistent sleep, homework, and morning routines helps students feel more prepared for the school day.

  • Organise school materials: Checking school bags, stationery, and planners before the term begins can reduce stress during the first week back.

  • Set one or two goals: Encouraging students to choose a small academic or personal goal for Term 2 can help build motivation and confidence.

  • Stay connected: Maintaining friendships and positive connections at school plays an important role in wellbeing and engagement.

Rest and Recharge During the Holidays

School holidays are also an important time for students to rest, recover and recharge after a busy term.

Downtime allows young people to reset both mentally and physically. Activities such as spending time outdoors, connecting with friends and family, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying a slower routine can all support wellbeing.

A balance of relaxation and light structure often works well, giving students time to unwind while still maintaining some daily routine.

As always, if students need support with their wellbeing or adjusting to school life, the Wellbeing Team is here to help. Students can reach out to a trusted staff member or speak with their Head of Year Level if they would like support.

We wish all students and families a safe and restful holiday break and look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed for Term 2.
